Another grey overcast day in Toronto. It's getting windy and cold. After exploring York, I drove back along St Clair to Keele and hence to my favorite Galen Weston outlet for $1.88 pineapples and $4.88 4L milk:

I saw some recently planted palm trees in New West this morning that were covered with Canadian Tire paper bags. I'm not sure if that will help them or not, but I guess it's worth a try!

I was in that same area last night; looks like you were around Gateway Station, while I was one station away at Surrey Central. I took SkyTrain over there so I didn't have to deal with driving on the Pattullo Bridge, but aside from it being cold there was no snow, as your photo shows. Downtown New West had 1cm or less at that point, but even then the ice was enough to make walking treacherous and I saw one car struggling to climb a hill just north of Columbia St.

Both Mobile and New Orleans have multiple freezing lows coming up this week.

Mobile forecasted at -7 and New Orleans at -5! That’s crazy cold for the Gulf of Mexico!

Manned up at noon, put on my safeties and work-boots to go to the grocery store in -35°C weather with the ice fog rolling out. A comfy way to walk around in this kind of cold. Not expecting to get anything done tomorrow, braving the cold or not. I don't drive so this stuff if a bit more serious for me.

Already -42 in Red Deer.

Fascinating how it is so much more extreme than Edmonton (-33) and Calgary (-31) which it sits between. Is that all due to urban heat islands?

This cold snap still makes me laugh. In the face of every long term prediction / projection for this year.

Forecast mild benign January… experience a cold snap for the ages!

EC forecast shows a high of -40C for Saturday and low of -51C for Saturday night/Sunday morning for Edmonton, excluding windchill. Crazy insane cold for any Canadian province.

It is currently -44°C in Edmonton International Airport and -33.4°C in Blatchford Field. As Blatchford Field builds up, the less useful the number is.

Beautiful winter day here. Grateful for the Great Lakes.

-4C and sunny.

Low of -8C (wind chill of -13).

The warmspot was Port Vineland, ON at 7.7C.

Warmest low was Burlington Piers, ON at 1.0C. Only 4 stations remained above freezing in the last 24 hours. Toronto (Island), Port Weller, Burlington Piers and Argentia, NL.

All BC stations remained below freezing throughout the day even the random little islands.

Vancouver recorded -13.4C last night... colder than anything Montreal has experienced so far.

Clear, sunny, dry, cold.

The temperature on my balcony was about -3 C, which means it was probably about -8 C on the street below.
The hotel across the street finally closed their pool and put a cover on it.

Frosty Friday's high at Vancouver Harbour was -6 C, the low was -10 C.

I'm always amazed at how many people seem to be in denial that we have winter. I see many in Ottawa with what you describe and their sneakers look all beat up and ruined by salt etc. Their feet must be like prunes. I see many walking to high school in sneakers, no hat, no gloves, light coat and with ears bright red at -15 or so.

When I drive by the HS on the way to drop my daughter off at her school, I too am amazed at the lack of preperation by so many teenagers. And I try to think back how I dressed back in the day and I can't recall. I'm sure it was more than a hoodie when it was winter. But I can't recall if I had proper boots or not. But I do know I wasn't rockin' white Jordans in the winter. I still don't understand why I see so many people, including adults, wearing white sneakers in the winter. And often they are expensive shoes.

When I was a teenager I could probably handle weather better though so I wouldn't be surprised if I didn't always have a scarf, toque and gloves on.

Once again, it snowed last night, like up to 3-4 cms and was sticking everywhere. Then the rain kicked in and it got up to 5 degrees between midnight and 5 am. I look outside this morning and everything is gone. I was going to put the kids on the sled at like 7pm to go get the mail but I said I'll wait till tomorrow. Sled and shovel still haven't been used this winter and I'm fine with that!

Weather temperatures are so messed up these days. I lived in Kelowna for nineteen years, and the coldest temperature I remember was -18c in grade achool. The past three years have seen temps below -20c.

I worry about the region's future as a wine producer. Those extreme temperatures last year destroyed so many vines. Some were over 50 years old.

Vancouver is similar. I never remember getting negative double digits here. Yet here we are, three years in a row.
