Kensington Bridge

The Kensington Bridge crosses over the Thames River and carries eastbound traffic on Riverside Drive into the downtown core.

The bridge is 90 years old and because of that, an EA has been initiated which will decide whether the bridge should be rehabilitated or replaced.

The first public information centre is scheduled for June 8.

Would've been nice if the city had replaced the Kensington bridge with a new bridge that connected EB traffic directly to King St, to compliment the Queen's Ave bridge for WB. I think the bridge to King St is still in official plans but likely will never be built now..

With Kensington hopefully the city replaces it with a new bridge. Seems like they've been constantly rehabbing it every couple year. It has served it time and purpose, better to build a modern one to serve handle more capacity!

I... think this is actually a damn nifty idea.... I mean, it would instantly become an internet topic, instantly draw SOME tourism... I like the idea, I really do!

PIC 1 was last night, and a video of the slides has been posted.

https://getinvolved.london.ca/kensingtonbridge

The PIC revealed that it is recommended that Kensington Bridge should be rehabilitated, and not replaced.

PIC 2 (scheduled for the fall) will reveal all of the alternative design concepts for the rehabilitation.

Wasn't there a proposal a while back to directly hook up Riverside EB with King via a new bridge?

If that was built first, then this bridge could be completely shut down for a easier rehab. You could make it one-way EB only with lots of room for pedestrians/bikes, car-free or even two-way with a WB lane merging into Riverside from Dundas.

The bridge EA has now been completed.

The recommended rehabilitation improvements include:

• Replacement of the concrete deck slab and repairs to substructure components.
• Repair and coating of structural steel components.
• Replacement of the existing pedestrian railing with a new railing system that replicates the aesthetic appeal of the original design.
• Construction of a crash tested barrier system on the north side of the bridge.
• Construction of decorative pillars with a name and date stone on the west end of the bridge similar to the original pillars which were removed in 2006.
• Increased travel lane widths from 3.0 m to 3.25 m to correspond closer to City Standards. Increased sidewalk widths from 1.83 m to 2.00 m as well as a raised 2.40 m wide cycle track.

Of course it is! The London website is trash and they need to hire some professional web designers who don't break links constantly.
