Upgraded beer garden bound for Summerhill's commercial strip

Halfway Crooks Beer is knee-deep in constructing an upgraded beer garden behind the commercial strip the local brewery has helped bring back to life in recent years, echoing other construction projects in virtually all directions in the southside neighborhood.

Hilton trivia

I had an interesting conversation with a hotel industry person recently. They said the downtown Hilton makes more than the entire Hampton Inn portfolio. That seems crazy, but maybe it's possible. Could it be the Trader Vic's effect??

Michelin Guide

I was able to catch the live stream of the event. They picked some winners but I was hoping for a two star restaurant or two

For a decidedly un-hip person, I've been to a bunch of the named spots

Restaurateur unveiled for historic, converted Midtown funeral home (Via Urbanize Atlanta)

Portman officials have said for months a single food-and-beverage operator will lease the entirety of a converted, landmark mortuary that’s the centerpiece of the firm’s massive and multifaceted Spring Quarter project.

Today that restaurateur was unveiled as Steve Palmer, an Atlanta native and founder of The Indigo Road Hospitality Group, the Charleston-based company behind local concepts such as West Midtown’s O-KU, Avalon’s Oak Steakhouse, and Colony Square’s Sukoshi.

Palmer plans to transform all 24,000 square feet of the historic H.M. Patterson Home and Gardens into what’s being described vaguely as a “morning-to-night F&B destination,” serving as Spring Quarter's adaptive-reuse centerpiece amidst two new high-rise towers, with a third potentially to follow.

Torchy’s Tacos Coming to West Midtown

Coming to Star Metals. As far as chain tex-mex tacos go, Torchy's is top notch.

Biggerstaff Brewing Is Closing After Two Years
via Eater Atlanta

“We dearly love Biggerstaff, but due to circumstances beyond our control we are closing our doors,” a statement provided to Eater reads. “We’ll miss seeing our amazing staff and the wonderful people we had the pleasure of serving each day.” A representative speaking on behalf of Biggerstaff Brewing declined to elaborate on the specific circumstances leading to the decision to close the brewpub and says there are no plans to relocate it and reopen elsewhere in the future.

Excited for this one, live 2 blocks away and need to get ready for my buddy's member/guest tourney in late April. Went by yesterday and signed up; they're hoping to have their occupancy license (or whatever is needed) and open for business by this TUE 1/16.

Pizza restaurant prototype lands marquee Atlanta BeltLine space

The most prominent retail space to take shape so far on the BeltLine’s Southside Trail corridor is being claimed by a new prototype from a popular pizza chain.

Mellow Mushroom reps released images and details Tuesday for a rebranded location at the southern rim of Grant Park that will overlook a section of the Southside Trail that’s under construction now—and another (Segments 2 and 3) that BeltLine leadership hopes to start building in a matter of months.

Mellow Mushroom plans to open a 3,400-square-foot space this summer as the anchor tenant of Middle Street Partners’ The Boulevard at Grant Park apartment community, located where Boulevard crosses the BeltLine.

Cafe Agora on Peachtree Place in Midtown reopened a couple months ago, completely renovated with an expansion into the corner space of the commercial commons building (previously Arden's Gardens juice/smoothies).

Not surprising with Newport selling, but another proposed restaurant pulled out of hotel row (Mitchell street). Disappointing - the redone block looks great, and the Thai restaurant (Tyde Tate Kitchen) seems to do a brisk business.

Atlanta private chef Bella Jones will no longer open her first brick-and-mortar restaurant at South Downtown’s Hotel Row. Jones’ Southern concept, Liz & Leon’s, was part of the initial lineup of tenants for the Mitchell Street redevelopment when it was still under the ownership of Newport RE.

Liz & Leon’s is not the first Mitchell Street tenant to pull out of South Downtown amid the ownership change. Pins Mechanical Co., an "eatertainment" concept operated by Ohio-based Rise Brands, terminated its lease at 222 Mitchell in June. Troy Allen, founder of Rise Brands, cited construction delays for the termination. How Crispy Express, a local sandwich shop, also pulled out of its Hotel Row location, though co-owner Bart Sasso told the Chronicle the decision was not related to Newport's struggles.

A bagel place is opening in the same building in the old Eco-Denizen space.

Let’s hope for something great in the 10th & Peachtree corner retail space!

Glad to see some good "destination" restaurants coming to Midtown. When I go out for dinner and/or drinks, I never go to Midtown. I don't even know what the options are other than fast food and non-descript local type of places. I always end up on the Beltline or in West Midtown or in Buckhead Village. Would be great for Midtown to scale up a notch or two. Seems like it with this addition.

Ecco, Rumi's, Nan, Lyla Lila, Consulate, Urban Hai. Most of these fall short of true destination dining, but definitely notches above "fast food or non-descript."

By the way, went to Prefecture finally in Brookwood. Probably the best meal I've had in Atlanta. I was in Japan in November, and that meal could go head to head with anything I had there, too.

Midtown has a reputation for bland chains, but I think it's undeserved. Yes, Midtown has things like Panera, Chipotle, etc, but just off the top of my head here are some great local restaurants I can easily walk to in my part of Midtown:

Lyla Lila (Michelin rated), Xian Gourmet (Michelin rated), Urban Hai, Ecco, Cafe Agora, Aviva by Kameel, Ponko, Atwoods, Cypress Street P&P, El Burro Pollo, El Valle, Low Country Steak, Sweet Hut, Ahn's Kitchen, Pasta da Pulcinella, Rreal Tacos, El Vinedo, Tabla, Rumi's, Momonoki, Politan Row food hall, E Ramen, Pho King, and Campagnolo.
