Any movement at the top of the Broadway Bridge on the 8-story office building? That's going to look good from the Westside. Both Knox and this one would really add updates to the views. If someone knew someone with a community garden plot there, and it got renewed for the summer of 2024, well that would give us a clue not wanted. If the plots are already cancelled, the building could sprout anytime. Those viewing new tenders could send us a welcomed hint when noticed.

I can confirm that the community garden plots are cancelled.

Lighthouse

The Fall of the Empire! Hopefully the new owners don't do what happened in San Francisco with the International Hotel and just put up another pale imitation replacement. This teardown process took particularly long though.

Thanks, Phone!
When the building starts, it should rise quite quickly, as the parkade is above ground. Although it's at the top of the riverbank, the condos in front of it and beside must give enough stabilization. I wonder how deep the pilings will go, and hopefully it helps to secure the bank, also.

As for the demise of the Lighthouse and sale of property, this could give the citizens a perception of downtown being safer and more friendly. I hope those that need help find it, and I hope downtown profits in development of that central area. (So the 8-story building they built that's attached to the old hotel is also being sold? Amazing transition from the 2010's...).

If the tenders are on the grill, I can't wait for some juicy render updates. That spot fills a skyline hole perfectly from many angles, and at a decent height.

Phone is absolutely right about the importance of working together to find solutions for preservation. It's ridiculous to sit there at an old heritage desk, sobbing over a Saskatoon postcard from 1952. The church itself, in cooperation with the developer, initiated this project for mutual benefits. Time for the Christening!
Juicy render updates, you say? Well, ask and you shall receive. I came across this the other day, and it looks ready to launch:

(and I have to say, I love it)

Wow, that does look great! Hopefully something similar is planned with the lot next to the Ukrainian museum and Parktown Hotel.

Mixed News

The Saskatoon skyline needle finally moving! But on another front is the news today that another Saskatchewan company (Bourgault Industries) has been taken out by a bigger firm from Ontario (Linamar). Seems to be a cap on the size of homegrown enterprises.

Looks like Council voted to proceed with removing parking minimums. I imagine it will take some time for this to come into effect, but I imagine/hope it will make a few projects just a bit more viable and affordable. Great to see this direction being pursued.

Spire is going to look really nice from that angle, framing the Bessborough without blocking it

Just went by the former Extra Foods site on Broadway and there's a "Sold" sign up.

Excellent news! As much as I miss the grocery store, the old building needs to go. I can't wait to see what they're planning! My guess would be another Luxe/Baydo/639 Main clone, and I say bring it on. I love living at 639 Main, and more density on the corner will make a great neighborhood even better. With this site, Broadway and 8th, and new offices and apartments on 12th, Broadway is going to thrive!

Also, the five houses west of there are still for sale. I've been wondering if they'll be bought for the same project as the Extra Foods site, or if they'll be a separate, future project. We'll see! I wonder what 2024 will bring for local development!

I've been fantasizing about a residential tower with a 1-2 floor CO-OP grocery store on the main/first 2 floors! It would be amazing to have a full service grocery store in the neighborhood - although I do worry a little about what that might do to some of the smaller local places?!

Glad you like 639 - every time I go by there I wonder what it's like inside, seems to have a really cool urban vibe for sure.

skeet1991, thanks for the renders find on The Spire! That definitely looks more market/brochure ready. I'm glad they dropped the reflective glass parts. But it looks fantastic. I'm sure a lot of University professionals coming to town will consider this as a place to call home. Awesome update!

And a shout-out to Echoes for upload, and CanadianDriverYXE for the skyline pic. Wow! That tower and the one to come pack a punch for our little skyline.

One thing I like is the distance between buildings being built; it's not just a clump of a skyline, as the Spire renders show. Cheers to 2024!

Anyone else having trouble opening the Spire web link? I get a 'not secure' alert and it won't allow me to open. Maybe it has something to do with my computer settings, but I have no difficulty opening other sites.

Hopefully, the Saskatoon Spire comes to fruition in a timely fashion unlike the Chicago Spire which last I heard remains a ginormous hole in the ground.
