Shit, I can find some in the heart of NDG or even Beaconsfield, even if they aren't very numerous.

For years when I would visit Ottawa, there was a highrise in Byward Market with someone flying a big Quebec flag on the balcony. I always chuckle. Vive la résistance!

lol they don't actually want to separate - their grievances are just leverage to rationalize the kind of reparations that, if applied to race rather than language, would have them screaming about wokeism

The large majority of the more than 49% the voting population in 1995 - most of whom are still around - would disagree with you.

Agree with them or not, they were prepared to leave a certain stability behind for something they believed in. It wasn't reparations that they were seeking.

The idea that Quebec separatism is fundamentally a scheming grift is just about the lowest level of analysis there is.

Haha! Actually, after I wrote my post I thought of editing it to add that I could also find some across the river in Ottawa.

Sure. I’m not a mod, but to the best of my knowledge anybody can come here and write anything they want, as long as it doesn’t violate forum rules.

I also have a choice on whether I want to participate or not. I have no desire or intention to control the narrative, but I am in control of my own time. TBH, I like to discuss topics of interest to me, but senseless arguments with people who just come here to sow angst is not how I want to spend my time.

So invite whomever you want. Makes no difference to me.

Agreed. One has to acknowledge (at least) Canada's willingness to allow such a referendum.

Of course it's the right thing to do - full stop. But look at Spain vis-a-vis Catalonia. Does Spain fully endorse democracy? I suppose it's a fairly new democracy. Even the US forbids any form of secession in its constitution.

^^What's ironic is this "Vive le Québec Libre" is so revealing of the 'two solitudes'. In one part of the country, absolutely shocked people, including 56 years later as per the angry posts of the grandpa from New Brunswick yesterday, while in the other part of the country, people either glad, or at least not shocked.

Personally I've never understood all the fuss about "Vive le Québec Libre". Maybe it's a case of 'lost in translation'. "Libre" in French doesn't mean "independent". If De Gaulle wanted to say explicitly that Québec should secede from Canada, he would have said "Vive un Québec souverain", or even clearer, "Vive un Québec independant". That would have left no room for doubt. "Vive le Québec Libre", on the other hand, is sufficiently vague. It means essentially a land that is free to take its own decisions, determine its policies, have the upper-hand over its economy, etc. It doesn't necessarily mean independence. I can perfectly imagine a politician from Geneva saying "Vive Genève Libre" at the end of a speech, and that wouldn't mean wishing to secede from Switzerland at all, but rather it would mean the federal government shouldn't infringe on the rights of the Republic of Geneva (official name of the canton), we should enjoy all the powers of our republic within the confederation without any federal interference, etc.

Maybe because the French do a piss poor job promoting and growing their language and culture and are one of the most insular cultures on the planet. Why is it the anglos fault for the French doing nothing to promote their language and culture in a minority setting in the modern era?
