The Big Owe - the gift that keeps on giving................

FWIW, especially given the costs of demolition, I vote to pay for making the necessary repairs, and making the Stade Olympique the National Track and Field Stadium, using it for international competitions, and, as the training base for Canada's track and field team.

Leave the roof off, fill it full of dirt. Worlds largest flower pot. Extend a path from the BioDome and make it an exhibit.

Two diametrically opposed opinions from the Moncton constituency.

I would say demo is out of the question.

The question is are they gonna do the bare minimum so it can continue its legacy of the most expensive boat show venue on the planet for 750M or are they going to approach the als and MFC and ask what it would take to get them both in there full time

my guess

Intimate 30k venue expandable to 40K with a retractable roof, modern amenities and player facilities. Access to the surrounding area for tailgates and fan party's with a favourable lease. That's the Billion dollar+ question. For them to spend that kind of money to get 2 or 3 concerts and the odd grey cup/ "outdoor" hockey game seems irresponsible. If they can pull 2 pro sports teams playing 30+ games a year at least they have a viable reason to spend that kind of money at least it would be thriving

Personally I would just love to see them replace the green roof panels with something translucent. Man would that ever modernize the interior bowl

I'm not a construction engineer but it's not hard to see that the work that will go into breaking that structure into small pieces and trucking it away (add the high cost of fuel) is not going to be cheap.
Once again, that price tag is 5 times more than any other stadium demolished. Yeah, it's absurd to think that values of one option be inflated to make the cost of an alternative more palatable.

There's no reason materials wouldn't be process on site and sold on site with the buyers trucking it off themselves or paying to have it trucked. We no longer go and dump everything into a pit. A concrete processing plant is the size of a tracker trailer. Metals are money.

I don't have a preferred option. All I'm saying is the cost to demolish makes no sense.

Bingo, and to the last point, not the same thing but, there has been a plan to break down the walls that block the view to the field from the passageways.

"This means that even if we line up at the food concessions, we can always keep an eye on what is happening on the ground. One attribute that adds to the customer experience and seems to appeal to new generations of fans is that feeling of open spaces"

Also people seem to forget about the tower. The tower apparently is thriving (unlike many office buildings) and is full to capacity. I assume that Desjardins and Sigma have long term leases and aren't going anywhere for a while. Not to mention the Olympic pool which was renovated a few years ago.

With the Premier's recent pronouncements about the roof perhaps it is time to repost this article from earlier in the year.

An ultra-modern stadium?
A virtual tour of the new Olympic Stadium gets people talking!
Jeremy Filosa 98.5 Sports March 20, 2023

The Olympic Stadium will experience major changes over the next few years. Originally planned, among other things, to host the 2026 World Cup, the stadium will undergo a major transformation.

And even if the famous Mondial will not stop in Montreal, the work will take place one way or another.

Some privileged people had the chance to take a virtual tour of the Olympic “new stadium”, as projected by the leaders of the Olympic Park.

With the help of a headset and virtual reality glasses, you can transport yourself into the future and see already today what the stadium could be like in a few years from now.

The projected images are simply a reflection of what the people of the Olympic Park would like to see as an improvement. For the moment, no work is yet mandated, in order to proceed.

When asked whether yours truly could take advantage of this virtual visit, the people at the Olympic Park indicated that this information remained privileged for the moment.

98.5 Sports still interviewed, on condition of anonymity, some people who had this chance, and here is the information we were able to gather.

An unrecognizable stadium

The consensus seems to be that the Olympic Stadium will be “unrecognizable” if all of these changes actually take place.

"It's just fantastic," a source tells us. I wish you to be able to make the visit so that you can realize it yourself.

First, as in the majority of modern stadiums, the intention would be to break down the walls that block the view to the field from the passageways.

This means that even if we line up at the food concessions, we can always keep an eye on what is happening on the ground. One attribute that adds to the customer experience and seems to appeal to new generations of fans is that feeling of open spaces.

Several new stadiums are now removing seats that are rarely occupied, to make way for terraces where people remain standing, in a more convivial atmosphere to watch the match or simply discuss other things.

A terrace for this purpose, which can accommodate up to 250 people, would also be in the plans. There is an example of a terrace recently added at the expense of some seats at Coors Field in Denver:

There is also talk of a large open space near the stadium entrance.

Goodbye Baseball

According to our information, despite having invested several million dollars to improve the baseball facilities, with the aim of hosting Blue Jays games, the Olympic Stadium would say goodbye to baseball for good.

The new seating configuration would no longer allow the benches closest to the field to move.

This means that the bottom of the stands would lose its horseshoe shape, giving way to a permanent rectangular configuration, no longer allowing baseball games to be held. The new configuration would favor football and soccer more.

Currently, as shown in this image, removable seat sections allow you to switch from a baseball configuration to a soccer configuration:

It is assumed that all seats would be replaced, but we do not have confirmation of this.

The Piece de Resistance

As is the case in the most modern stadiums, the people of the Olympic Park would like to mount huge giant screens which would be suspended from the technical ring of the stadium.

Impossible to know exactly how many screens we would like to erect. It's becoming more and more fashionable, and it allows you to see the images of the match well, no matter where you are installed.

Here is an example of a modern stadium, the Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta, where the giant screen goes around the ring:

Add to this, the replacement of the sound system, the lighting, the repair of the dressing rooms and the replacement of the roof.

No deadline has yet been worked out for this multi-million dollar project. This winter, the first work began with the replacement of the playing surface which would have cost, according to our information, approximately $750,000.

The big key for Alouettes and CF Montreal if they were to move to the Big O is the lease ie: how many suites and party decks will it have? and how much of that revenue can they keep? If the Quebec government is not willing to give those to the Als and CF then very likely they stay at Molson and Saputo.

Considering the financial situation, the Governments reluctance to pay nurses and teachers what they are due (but they gave themselves 30%, classic), and the cancelation of the Quebec City tram, I don't think we should be investing a $Billion+ in the Big Owe right now.

I agree but seeing the safety risk with the roof and both the caq and mayor plante wanting this renovation unfortunately it looks like hundreds of millions will be spent on this.

Totally agree, they (Als/CFM) should help fund the renovation but also have a piece of the action to keep them committed.

The timing and money allotted is never going to be right. I still have to wonder why no one that I can recall really bitched about the huge amount of money that went to BC Place. Was that because it was completed correctly. Granted, this is going to be a lot more if they choose to do it right, but still

Could they build a new technical ring set back from the current one, and have it in place before removal of the old one? Could reduce the need for full shoring.

Maybe tying into the arches from the side is too involved to allow that...

I see parc des princes stadium in Paris which is the design Roger Taillibert used for when he desinged the Big O is going in for a renovation and new canopy style partial roof. However I cannot find articles stating the cost and construction process. Parc des princes is the same style technical ring as the big O.

For those who want to see some drawings and pictures related to the Olympic Stadium structure:
https://parcolympique.qc.ca/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/A_architecture_genie.pdf

The amount of pre-tensioning and post-tensioning going on in the structure, it is a wonder it has held up as well as it has.

BC Place initial build and renovations weren't anywhere near as costly as the Olympic Stadium in Montreal. Don't think we can compare.

New Brantford Arena

Looks like the long rumoured new arena in downtown Brantford has gotten a step closer. Will look for the source later.

It was $514 million for the renovations in 2010 dollars which adjusted for inflation is near $700 million today.

Yes, Montreal will cost more but that was a serious hunk of change put into BC Place and there was little pearl clutching, likely because of the faith people had in the project.

In Montreal's case, people might still be wondering if the unions or mafia will get a large piece of the action further driving up the cost.

Can't help to wonder if they are using Taylor Swift as a lightning rod (excuse) to bolster public approval for a new roof. I mean how do we know that it is true ? I haven't seen any official postings from her or her management or even Rogers saying she skipped Montreal just cause of the stadium. We are just taking the word of the Tourism Minister. When I saw she was doing 6 shows in Toronto and Zero in Montreal I figured it was a scheduling problem but then I remember the stadium is mostly empty. The timing is supicious. She performed in some stadiums in other countries that don't look all that great either. In Rio de Janeiro she performed in 60 degree C heat and they didn't even hand out water to fans. 1000 fans passed out and one female fan died of heat exposure. They covered the outside ventilation ducts so fans outside couldn't look inside to watch the show for free, well that was a smart thing to do in that heat. Is that the new benchmark of a quality stadium ? She elected to do shows in that Stadium in Rio in those horrid conditions, but she passes on Montreal cause of a roof ? And what guarantee does Montreal have that if improvements happen to Olympic, that she will indeed come ? Rogers Place is undergoing $ 200 million renovating the lower seating deck, likely the reason the Rolling Stones passed on Toronto and will do Vancouver instead. There could be several reasons why Swift passed up on Montreal so I'd like to see some evidence to support the Tourism Minister's claims the roof killed the deal. Get a statement from her management or the promoter to back it up.

Can't help to wonder why these posts look like ChatGPT with a Taylor Swift obsession. Why did northernlight99 change to northernlight9? Inquiring minds want to know.
