The last 13 gates of Phase 2 open tomorrow.

Per the press release, flight $394 to Atlanta will be the first to use the new gates.

I imagine this will shrink the hardstand operations significantly and also reduce the number of Delta flights in the B terminal. The last 3 Delta flights I've taken have been from the new gates opened earlier this year and it's been great.

Anyways, one more milestone and the last until the tunnel opens next October...

Wow! Nice pics! Thank you for sharing this with us. I’m glad you like it.

In about one more year for next phase 3 central tunnels will be open in October 2024.

Simple Flying did an article about long airport walks.
Salt Lake City is mentioned, of course, but they at least note that we will drop of the list next year when the new tunnel is completed.

The airports that won’t leave you high and dry: Atlanta and Salt Lake City
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta airport is the busiest in the world. That doesn’t mean you need to worry about cancellations. The fourth-ranked airport had the lowest cancellation rate in the bunch, at roughly 1%. You won’t spend much time on the tarmac either—the airport rated highly for taxiing times.

Atlanta’s airport is situated on 4,700 acres, and all that space means lots of room for aircraft to maneuver, which helps avoid traffic jams, says Jordan Biegler, assistant general manager of operations at Hartsfield-Jackson.

Salt Lake City’s cancellation rate (also around 1%) landed it in the top spot in that category among midsize airports—even though the city gets even more snowfall on average than Minneapolis. Deicing pads at the ends of the airport’s runways help keep planes moving during inclement weather, says Treber Andersen, the airport’s director of operations.

(Good news, Delta Air Lines loyalists: Atlanta, Minneapolis and Salt Lake City are among the carrier’s hubs.)

I'll take a long single isle flight on Hawaiian any day over a Delta A330.

I don't hate Delta, I just really like Hawaiian.

Yes! We sure did! We flew PHX-HNL over decades ago. We flew on Hawaiian. It was on the 767-300 and I went inside the aircraft and I saw a purple seat. Wow! I love purple seats in the economy class. They gave us a free meal. I ate spaghetti. It’s so delicious!

I fly delta and have only been in the main part of the airport…but I have heard lots of complaints about the walk to the B gates. Especially for people with disabilities, families and the elderly. Are they going to be building the tram? I also heard they built the terminals 10 feet shy of being required to have a tram between them. Maybe it’s just talk but i thought I’d ring it up

The complaints about walking are severely overblown. There are moving sidewalks almost the whole way. People with disabilities, families and the elderly are at a disadvantage anywhere they go. Major airports are going to include walking. They just are. I get it though, people are upset because the spoke style terminal was a bit faster walking wise, but the size of that airport was not going to work.

As far as the tram, you won't see it until a 3rd concourse is built, which will be a long time. In the meantime, the central tunnel will shorten the walk for the majority of people. I've done the very farthest walk with my son before. It took 13 minutes. If I had all my young kids, I'd show up at the airport 5 minutes earlier. Whoopedeedoo.

SLC is a fantastic airport

Also, on the bummer news front, looks like Discovery flight to Frankfurt is ending. Bummer that it didn't work out and I hope it doesn't deter other airlines from entering the market in the future. We shall see.

Please post the construction photos. I haven’t see it yet. How is concourse B East doing? Is coming along nicely? What happened to the former hardstands near concourse B West? They used to be. Is that demolition yet?

They haven't done a photo or construction update on the airport site since Phase 2 completed. The monthly board meeting agenda will be released this coming week and should have some updates.

From my flight this week, they are still cladding the north central node and doing stone pillars for the last extension of the north concourse.
