^ This is how I'd like VIA's Corridor services and transit integration to work most of the time. This is why I am such a big HFR booster.

I took one of the new trains when travelling to Toronto on Monday. Unlike the older trains, these trains Internet service actually works.

I was in the older car going to Toronto. The internet worked just fine, but maybe that was because I was in the Business car?

Reading this, I easily imagined european travel. Imagine if you didn't need to schedule everything around limited frequency VIA service. You wouldn't really need to worry as much about connections.

And don't get me going about VIA weighing your luggage...

We probably have hourly flight departure between Ottawa and Toronto, imagine if we had hourly train departures between the two? And best yet, imagine if it was affordable too! Regional train tickets in Europe are often in the 20-50 euro range (1-way), while Ottawa-Toronto on VIA, especially last minute can easily cost you $150-$200 one way!

Business class was 372.00 return. I also booked it last minute.

That is very expensive. We need a service with ample seating which allows last minute travel and money is made with the high volume of passengers.

Agree, but I did a quick look for Ottawa to Toronto (Billy Bishop) return and flights ranged ranged from 215 (you had to be at the airport at 5 am) to over 1,000.00.

Not having to be at the point of departure an hour to two hours ahead of time and not having to go through security is a massive bonus for me.

I rarely use VIA but did this summer. Had to pay $210 round-trip in economy, yikes.

Would've been cheaper to drive, even with just 1 person in the vehicle.

A shortage of seating allows this kind of pricing. With the lack of equipment and train slots, reasonable pricing is not possible when trains are nearing sell out

Anybody else pleasantly surprised with the new VIA points rates rolled out last week?

Before, I needed 1100 points to book an Economy ticket to Toronto (regardless of time of booking).
Now redeem rate is based on the price at booking at ~5.5 points per dollar. So it would cost between 320 points (in advance) and ~800 (last minute).
So even on the basic tier you get ~16% rebate. And insane 48% on Premier? Get every 3rd ticket for free. Amazing deal for frequent travellers.

Trying to find the catch, but so far the only one I found is that I still have to pay taxes (taxes used to be included).

I think so. In my last 8-10 trips to TO in economy, there has been a Wi-Fi signal but no Internet. My seat mates had the same problem so it wasn’t my equipment.

The plan for HFR is to have hourly train service between Montreal-Ottawa-Toronto. Currently CN limits the number of trains a day that VIA is allowed to run. Once VIA owns their own track, they are only limited by the design capacity of the track.

Does anyone know if we can bring our bikes on VIA trains from Ottawa now?

They suspended it during the pandemic, and then basically said that they'd only allow it once they replace their trainsets with the new ones. Whenever I asked, I got a "not yet" response. Maybe someone here knows, otherwise I'll call them again. Starting to plan some 2024 bike adventures

And that's the baseline service. Very likely if they owned the track, they'd add additional departures at peak.

I'm not sure if they have restored bike service yet, but prior to the new fleet, bikes were only permitted if the train had a baggage car. With the new fleet, there are bike racks on the new trains, but they occupy the space used by some of the luggage racks, so they would need to be sure that there is room for the bikes.

I have read that VIA is going to require passengers reserve space in the luggage racks, presumably so they can be sure that that there is space for all bags and bikes onboard, without them to overflowing into the aisles. This will only apply to large bags; a carryon sized bag and a personal item can be put in the overhead bins and under the seat without a reservation. Presumably this change will allow them to accept bikes on trains that are appropriately equipped, if space is reserved in advance.

Thanks. I'm still looking to find out if they have restored it. I called yesterday, but gave up after spending nearly 30 minutes on hold. I might try again at lunch time today, and select French instead

Certainly an interesting idea, though I think they’re going a bit too far.

Apparently a new federal department is currently being formed to look into high frequency rail between Toronto & Quebec city. Not sure why Niagara to Toronto is not included.

Ottawa will be a big winner if Via Rail is successful in its bid to raise $3 billion in private funding to improve train service in the Montreal-Ottawa-Toronto corridor, OBJ has learned.

Most of Via’s proposed improvements would be on the line between Ottawa and Toronto, Via president Yves Desjardins-Siciliano said in an exclusive interview recently.

Via's chief executive appears optimistic the government-owned passenger rail company will raise the money required to improve service between Montreal and Toronto and turn the corridor from a money-loser into a profitable venture.

Under Via’s proposed improvements, travel time between Ottawa and Toronto would be slashed to as little as two hours and 30 minutes, making it competitive with flying and much faster than travelling by car or bus. Currently, the fastest trains between the two cities take almost four hours.

Train service along the Montreal-Ottawa-Toronto corridor is now slow and infrequent. Via says it loses $48 for each passenger it carries on the route – a sum covered by the federal government in its annual subsidy to Via of about $300 million.

Mr. Desjardins-Siciliano believes he can make service profitable in the corridor by slashing journey times and doubling the number of trains.

Right now, rail service linking Canada’s three largest eastern cities operates in a triangle, rather than a corridor. But if Via’s ambitious plans are successful, trains will speed between Montreal and Toronto, with a stop in Ottawa, in as little as three hours and 50 minutes.

The journey time between Ottawa and Montreal would be cut to about one hour and 20 minutes, about 30 minutes faster than the current fastest time. The rail link between downtown Ottawa and downtown Montreal would be faster than taking a car, bus or even a plane, taking check-in times into account.

Via is now in discussions with major investors – notably pension funds – in the hope of persuading them to invest in the proposed service improvements.

We’re now well into the 21st century, so why is Via considering $3 billion in service improvements that will still only put us in the 20th century?

Super-high-speed trains, such as those in Europe and Japan, would cost billions of dollars in government subsidies, and few if anyone in Canada wants to pay for them. Via estimates it would cost at least $9 billion to introduce super-high-speed trains serving Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto.

One of the company’s biggest problems is that it has to share tracks – which are often old and dilapidated – with freight trains.

Under Via’s proposed improvements, $2 billion would be spent on new tracks or renovations to existing tracks. Most of the rest would be spent on doubling the fleet of trains that serve the Montreal-Ottawa-Toronto routes. Via would have exclusive use of about 25 per cent of all track on the corridor.

Via estimates these improvements would enable it to operate the Montreal-Ottawa-Toronto routes with an annual profit of about 15 per cent. That profit would then be shared between Via and the private investors.

Via has not yet indicated how such profits, if any, would be shared with investors. Mr. Desjardins-Siciliano told OBJ he expects the partners to get “a handsome return on their investment.”

Canadian taxpayers also stand to gain, he said, since he expects profitability in the Montreal-Ottawa-Toronto corridor to “eliminate a chunk of the federal subsidy.”

A big reason super-high-speed train service is so expensive is that it requires exclusive use of track, with no railroad crossings, added Mr. Desjardins-Siciliano.

He estimated it would take 12 to 15 years to implement the plan. The improvements proposed by Via can be introduced gradually, he said.

If investors are found and if the federal government approves Via’s plans, service improvements could begin within 18 months to two years after that, the Via chief told OBJ.

Where did you see that there will be a new federal department?
