Phoenix has basically moved into a position consonant with its relative population. It traditionally has slightly lagged in GDP numbers; last year Phoenix was behind Minneapolis, and as recently as 2019 it was behind Denver. Being just behind Detroit in GDP makes some sense as Phoenix CSA is just behind Detroit CSA in population.
