I think whats more feasible and likely to happen is reducing the size of the stadium back to its original 43,000 size for the 1978 Commonwealth Games. This means reducing the size of the upper decks something being done a lot these days in MLB in Cleveland Chicago and Denver. Also making the corners grassy Knolls again instead of additional seats. As for the track and field being far its just too expensive to remedy.

It's really not a bad arena. It's just a terrible location. Too bad we can't pick it up and move it to LeBreton Flats.

I had thought of that as well but the costs of doing that physically likely would be prohibitive as well. A more likely scenario would be tarping them off like the endzones.

That still doesn't address the need for some of the features LeLacheur was talking about and even the new mid sized stadium that was proposed is unlikely. Can anyone forsee Commonwealth being abandoned or Edmonton getting a new stadium before Calgary.

It would be interesting to see if it is possible to "deconstruct" the sections that were added. Maybe something impedes that now. It would also be interesting to know how much it would cost.

The issues with commonwealth

-Too big both in footprint and seating

-Lacks modern amenities

-Terrible sightlines

Knocking down 1 side of commonwealth and Completely renovating the existing side is the only option if they truly want to fix all those problems at once. Building a New side gives you a chance to modernize the Stadium, Party decks, Proper suites, Loge seats. It gives you a chance to move the field of play closer to the existing stands, And gives you a chance to drastically reduce capacity If commonwealth is 54,000 seats in its current form, One would imagine each side is around 24,500 seats (Give or take, assuming endzone seats 5000ish) So you build the other side and redesigned endzone with 10,000- 12,000 seats (Tall side of THF), You instantly have a Mosaic and IGF level stadium that exceeds the elks and the cities needs for a similar price. I'm assuming 275-300M depending on the demo cost.

I know you guys hated the levy's stadium concept but I found a better example of what i'm referring to. They are currently doing a 300 million dollar renovation to memorial stadium in kansas city that faces largely the same issues as commonwealth, So think about a slightly scaled down version of this

NCC has give the Ottawa Senators and Michael Andlauer until September 2024 to decide on the LeBreton Flats arena.

Problem is the private sector never really gets involved in building new or even renovating stadiums in Canada in most cases. From memory only there's rogers footing the bill for the ballpark renos but that's all I can think of? Maybe that will change but usually its always taken a olympic pan am or commonwealth games bid to get stadiums built here most times. And that looks like it will not happen again due to the insane costs now of hosting and countries pulling out left right and center.

Construction manager named for massive revamp of Hamilton’s FirstOntario Centre

EllisDon has been selected as the construction manager for the $280 million renovation at FirstOntario Centre in Hamilton, Ont., project developer Oak View Group (OVG) reported to the Daily Commercial News.

This comes after the City of Hamilton signed a deal with OVG and the Hamilton Urban Precinct Entertainment Group (HUPEG) to respectively undergo the FirstOntario Centre facelift and revitalization of the downtown core.

OVG is leading the project to transform the facility, formerly known as Copps Coliseum, into an 18,000-seat capacity venue.

HUPEG, a regional consortium is working in collaboration with leading industry consultants and development partners including LIUNA, First Ontario Credit Union and Meridian Credit Union to revitalize downtown Hamilton’s arts and entertainment district.

Commonwealth lacks modern amenities, but has boxes, some 'loge', onfield 'suites' etc. and is amazing when full...

BUT is set back quite far from the field and is a bit tired overall.

HOWEVER, we didn't cancel our season tickets because of any of those things, for that decision was WHOLLY based on their pathetic on field performance, idiot management/leadership and neglect of season ticket holders value proposition vis a vis other cheaper options.

Make the team a winner and thank season ticket holders and you are 75% of the way there.

Commonwealth would be perfect now for the Elks at the original 40k configuration. Could reduce it to 30k+ with wider and more premium seat options and suites. Would still need to do something about the track though. Oh, and get rid of the Rider green seats - I never understood why they went with the lighter green seats.
I’ve always loved the look of Commonwealth (and still do) - also has great lighting.

I have been lurking on this website for a long time, like years, but never posted. So take me with a grain of salt. But the idea to dmolish one side makes total sense. What i would do is the side that will stay, move the field over 5meters closer, and i would rip out all the the north endzone seats, put bleachers in temporarily for a year. Then rip down the other grandstand completely, but keep the other infrastructure that has the concessions etc...
Build that grandstand, with however many seats, 12k-15k. then tie it in to that infrastructure and the rec centre to the south. Then on the north side i would create something similar to regina Pil Country, make the concourse on the north side wider and create that "Party Zone" atmosphere that younger people tend to like. Now on the existing grandstand, you either renovate it completely, wider seats, remove the top 30 rows and create boxes, or remove and mirror the new side. tie it in to the existing infrastructure and then you have a 32-35k stadium. Perfect size for edmonton. Once the team gets better, fans will come back, but not to 50k like the past. but the 35k will not limit the concerts that come once in a while, although being smaller, those may then go elsewhere.
Just my thoughts as a years long lurker. ha

and to add, i think its dumb not using the upper bowl next year, what they should have done is got rid of all the end zone seating, minus the lawn furniture suites. and just sold in between the goal lines and the first 10-15 rows of the upper bowl.
Those use the same concourse so its not really a matter of staffing per se. it would just tighten it up a bit.

Word is that the arena that is home to Kingston's OHL team (Frontenacs?) could be renamed Slush Puppie Place.
