I was looking through Chicago's permit website to figure out why 1221 W Washington hasn't started construction despite receiving permits almost a year ago. Apparently there's a hold by DPD because the warehouse that's a part of the development has an orange rating on the Chicago Historical Resources Survey.

That's odd. I thought they already demolished the orange-rated, Burnham-designed warehouse on the site? What's left to preserve?

I have a faint recollection of this building before...feels like it was quiet for a while, until now:

Permits are in the works for 566 W. Van Buren

https://chicago.urbanize.city/post/permits-are-works-566-w-van-buren

I kinda like it, especially as pretty decent filler. Although, I would have rotated the building 180 degrees, for the inner courtyard to get a lot more sunlight on the south side of the building.

Big if true. The work lights are on in the photo, but that proves little.

Speaking of shutdown projects, anyone hear anything about GEMS II? The thing has been inactive for like 5 years.

This may seem silly, but after about 40 years of Helmut Jahn using the cupola as his theater of operations, I wish his work could be used as a sort of

theme for that temple atop the Jewelers building. It might be a worthwhile tourist/educational site.

Whether you like his work or not, very few people have left such a large and varied mark upon the city.

I like this idea. The main issue with the cupola is accessibility since it can only be reached by a small birdcage style elevator.
