That morning skyline shot inspired me to instead think about something actually possible: I’d say it’s time to update the main photo on the city’s Wikipedia page, the current pic was captured over a decade ago.

Approving this project would be just as egregious a mistake as the Randi was. More wasted downtown space for average and suburban heighted projects. All that is different is this has a midblock walkway.

The Planning Commission needs to hold these developers to the relatively basic and achievable standards the City has already set for its Downtown. It's time they start putting their foot down, or we will be stuck with countless 5-7 floor buildings built by small minds and short-term thinkers.

Right now, developers think the city will basically approve anything, so they design to the lowest quality that they believe will be approved, even when that is below what the code and standards ask for.

While I would love for our standards to be even greater, I think the age of giving reprieve to laziness needs to end.

In my opinion, it is better to make sure Downtown is built right, than to settle and regret it for decades. But maybe that's just me.
Preach, couldn’t agree more.

Yeah, I've taken some shots from the 1200 N bridge in the past couple months with the intention of doing this. My camera just isn't good enough and I haven't been happy with how they've turned out. You need a decent optical zoom from there to get a good resolution image, so a phone camera won't cut it.

And I think I agree about the Moda Luxe site. We should not be handing out exceptions to height minimums in D-1, especially given the demand for housing right now. These developers just want to get away with using wood frame construction. Get your comments in to the planning department before November 9th.

I’ve always thought that the previously proposed plans for 255 South State would have been great at the Moda Luxe location. I can’t seem to remember the name, but it was a nice tower that also had a mid-block walkway. Would have looked good across from the Worthington. Does anyone remember that proposal?

La Porte Proposal

Are you talking about this disaster by that shady developer who scammed his way into a project he had no ability to follow through on? Who promised to preserve the SRO facade then immediately demolished it? Who went with an unproven floor system and 10 stories because he didn't want to go through the delay of requesting a variance to go higher? And then realized his original architect didn't have the knowledge or ability to design anything taller than one story so he had to find a new architect and start over delaying the project for years? That project?

UT_Presto might be thinking of "The Strand", which was an alternative proposal for the 255 State site and more recent than La Porte. Not sure what the story is behind it but yeah, this would be really nice at the Moda Luxe location. Coincidentally, this architect is the one who designed the old Moda Luxe. The new design is by Dwell.

Isn't that photo is taken from fairly high off of the ground? I'm not sure even the highest levels of a baseball stadium would get a similar view from the West High location. Here is the approximate ground view from there.

Industry et al

Surprised that nobody is talking about the collapse/trainwreck in the Industry empire. Huge implications across dozens of projects. I said it months ago, but this market is DONE. If a project wasn't out of the ground before this market collapse, it won't be built. Huge hat tip to BSL once again for breaking this huge story.

I took this photo last summer when my son did a clinic there. This is right behind home plate at ground level. I think being up just 10-20 feet and you would get a good view being above the trees.

Do you expect the Maker's Line projects that are already out of the ground (like the one in Sugarhouse next to Fairmont Park and the micro units on 700 E) to be finished by another contractor? Or will they just be a concrete/rebar messes for years?

I'm most upset about the loss of Recursion and the other biotech company in the granary district. Does this halt SLC's biotech momentum? Suburbs win again?

I sure with I could read these articles. I'm so annoyed with the Tribune. You can't even read an article without subscribing/

Does anyone know what is going on with the lot on the southeast corner of 600 south and 400 West? There is construction fencing and the site has been cleared and prepped for construction.

Oh, that's so much better. I was also kinda hoping the market pause would encourage J Fisher to scrap Moda Luxe and just take up both sites with a larger tower concept, but they ended up going in the wrong direction on every point. Hopefully the city will push back.

Many of the Makers Mark projects in SLC have already switched General Contractors. The ones in Sugarhouse though haven't been as lucky but I hear they are actively looking for a replacement.

The loss of Recursion and the other biotech company from the Granary is sad but it isn't a win for the burbs either. The other biotech company is building out space just west of I-215 from what I heard. Recursion is still looking. In both cases, it is likely that this can help the planned lab building along 2nd West and 6th South (directly west of the RL project). Brandon Fugal has the funds to build the project provided that the companies would sign onto the project, which could be more likely now.

I heard about this on a podcast the other day, publicly traded corporations are relocating their headquarters at the highest rate in 7 years and apparently the top four states with the highest net gain are: Florida, Texas, Arizona and Utah.

We have had many discussions, on this forum, about how Salt Lake needs an S&P 500 company to build a tall, HQ building here. If this is true, that may happen at some point.

Quote:
Top States that won HQ moves

Not only are corporates moving in high numbers, but as many as 24% of those that moved chose to relocate their headquarters to a different state entirely. Here's the breakdown.

Florida had 86% more corporations move their HQ there, compared to the number of companies that chose to move their head office out of Florida -- the highest net gain of any state!

Texas, the state that in the last year has officially moved their welcomed Hewlett-Packard and Caterpillar Inc, among other companies, saw the second highest net gain (71%).

Two other states had notably strong showings, Arizona (+65%) and Utah (+57%), both saw very impressive growth in the number of HQs of America's corporations they now host.

That’s the one! La Porte was far before my time on this forum. Thanks Atlas.

BSL recently posted an updated article on Lusso II, which explains the changes. I updated the post on Lusso I & II over on the Comp.Thread today. Hopefully, that will clarify a few things. Here's the BSL article: https://buildingsaltlake.com/north-temple-project-lusso-2-approved-despite-public-outcry/

BSL: The Salt Lake City Planning Commission approved Phase 2 of a development at 57 N 1000 W, the site of a Mexican restaurant, this week.

This project was initially proposed in June of 2022, and required numerous changes through a design review and planned development, including ground floor activation, glass usage, and building facade length.
