The former Music Box / Pix Theater.

When I was a kid a classmate's father ran a theater here in the midwest and we used to snoop around in the basement which -at the time- was full of old movie posters and lobby cards.

This theater.

Sadly, it burnt to the ground in 2007.

So. .um. . .the tracks just end at this spot near the Bailey Block (& then passengers are left to traipse through the weeds) Where was the streetcar coming from?

Here's additional information.

The Bailey Block sits isolated on Townsend Avenue at the end of a widened but still still dirt street.
Behind us us the Eagle Road Road to Garvanza and Pasadena was small and unimproved.

The old Bailey/Murfield Block still stands!

Tritch Hardware has taken over the building.

Here's a rare cabinet card from Sunbeam Studio of Chinese-American children....Dated Feb. 20, 1898.

Thankfully there is writing on the back.

hmm. . ."Puck's Children" ...Does anyone have any idea who Puck is? I looked through some old city directories and didn't find much.

And if they are Pucks children why do they have different last names?

Do I ask too many question?

The writing on the photo seems to say MR. CHEN PUCKS CHILDREN. I suspect that Mr. Puck was a Chinese American uncle taking care of 2 other family's kids.

In Chinese names, the surname comes first, to show respect for one's ancestors. As such, names are formatted like this:

Mr. Jagger Mick
Mr. Bowie David
Mr. Lennon John

So with Mr. Chen Puck, Chen is quite likely the surname.

Also, Chinese names tend to have three parts, such as:

Chow Yun-fat
Chan Kong-sang (Jackie Chan)
Lee Jun-fan (Bruce Lee)

... so it's possible that the kids' two-part names on the back of the photo are simply leaving off the surname (meaning they all share the surname of Chen).

To be clear, this is all just speculation on my part...

Charles Puck's Los Angeles photos are held in Huntington's collections-- a contemporary of Chas. Pierce--- Many Fort Hills and Chinatown images---

I haven't been able to find Charles Puck's photographs at the Huntington Library. Do you have a specific link, rick m?

But I did find other photographs that we've seen on NLA in the past.

We have covered Nat Goodwin on NLA but I don't believe we have seen his home in Santa Monica.

It's a tad bit blurry.

Currently on eBay

Judging by the benches it looks like it was somewhere along the beach walk.

As a reminder:
Goodwin owned a cafe and cabaret, "Cafe Nat Goodwin", on the private Bristol Pier in Santa Monica, California between 1913 and 1916.
After he sold the business in 1916, its name was changed to the Sunset Inn.

Here are a couple views of his cafe in a pervious post by Noircitydame.

Baron Long had a cafe called Sunset Inn in Santa Monica at the same time; it lost it's liquor license in Apr 1917, then he went in with Schneck and Nat's was renamed Sunset Inn. It closed for good after the summer season 1923 and the Fotoplayer's Frolic frolicking was transfered to the Plantation in Culver City. As a side note, Paul was the layer in the Madelynne Obenchin murder case, defended D.A. Asa Keyes in his bribery trial and represented Winnie Ruth Judd in her trunk murder trial. The old Nat Goodwin's/Sunset Inn was demolished in 1926.

Coincidentally enough, e_r, Dorsey Patton, who came to be mentioned recently in connection with the giant woman (post 60796), died in Goodwin's house:

More death in the Goodwin house...before Goodwin owned it:

On July 30, 1903, the Times reported that "sporting man" Thomas Fitzgerald had let a contract to build a $10,000 house at Hart Avenue and Ocean Front.

Times July 25, 1905:

Times July 25, 1906:

Goodwin made a number of additions, including a conservatory, to the house over the next few years.

Times Feb 1, 1919...it seems Goodwin sold the SM house not long before he died himself, the death occuring not long before he was
to marry for the sixth time. Note also that Hedda Hopper's husband (she was his fifth wife)--and Paul Drake's father-- makes an appearance:

Prior to Huntington having photo databases (about 16 years ago!) I made a number of personal visits there to go thru holdings of all their Puck images as well as the unique work of Theodore Hall-- Perhaps direct an inquiry to Erin Chase as she was so helpful during my research.

If you have been there in recent years, I am the one responsible for much of the decor from the remodel 12 years ago. The Hieronymus Bosch wallpaper, and the Lobby lighting (I'm very proud of how that turned out) You can blame that all on me ( ͡~ ͜ʖ ͡°)
