A friend of mine is Senegalese. He likes to sing this song when shovelling his driveway. We get a lot snow so he has lots of time to sing.

One major difference is that Switzerland is the product of willful union between quite different peoples, whereas Canada is the product of a conquest of established peoples by a single imperial power. The mythology of Confederation in 1867 attempts to push us mythologically in the direction of "willful union" but there is still a lot of conquest-related baggage that we can't manage to shake.

EDIT: Canada was never really meant as a country to be "shared" equally in terms of opportunity and power between the British and the French, and even less so with Indigenous peoples of course. At best certain minorities needed to be appeased or controlled so that things didn't spill over, but it was always clear who the bosses of the country (the "charter" group) were going to be. Canada did become more enlightened starting around the 1960s and I'd argue has progressively gotten better since that time but there are still deep-seeded things that are difficult to overcome.
Another issue I think is the elephant in the room, otherwise known as the... United States of America. If the US were a Francophone country, probably the Québécois would feel quite confident about themselves and their future, and would feel quite at ease inside Canada (conquest or no conquest), with no desire to secede. In fact in such a world, it is probably the Anglo-Canadians who would experience lots of angst, afraid to disappear and become assimilated. And I assume lots of Indian and Chinese immigrants in Anglo-Canada would prefer to speak French, the language of Oncle Sam, and not make much effort to learn English, which would add to the anxieties in Anglo-Canada.

Whereas French Colonialism was completely spotless and invariably harmonious with the natives they...integrated.

Algeria was not that long ago, btw, Malek.

Colonialism was shitty, no matter who perpetuated it.

Here you were alluding to (regretting almost it seems) the good old days of British imperialism, not French imperialism.

Yes.

Each of the three main language groups of Switzerland is located right next to the large and powerful homelands of their respective language (and culture to some degree).

We don't have that.

Take a page from Lio: slum landlords never live in or near their rental properties.

Old habits. I used to live in a slum. I remember as a kid having to break the ice in the toilet bowl on cold winter mornings so I could use the bathroom (this is not an exaggeration BTW).

Same here. Our toilet froze during the winter....we had to use buckets. The furnace didn't work, and our plumbing froze up. We had to rely on electric plug-ins, but if you tried to use more than one at a time (in different parts of the trailer), you'd blow the fuses.

I wasn't a youngster then...I went through a short period of crushing poverty in my mid twenties.

It's just Malek. Or a dead ringer for Malek.

Though I can confirm New Brisavoine is from France.

His mind is 100% in Quebec.

He is absolutely a dead ringer for Malek. Ramming his opinion across as if it were facts, and seizing on someone when they disagree.

It's not that uncommon to encounter people from France who are keenly interested in Québec.

We do have the image of the holdout Village Gaulois in Asterix that appeals to a lot of them.

You are out of line. You have no basis to level such a comment towards me. I have NEVER waxed nostalgic about the "good old days of British imperialism".

He's trolling you... best to just let him tell you the way things really are in your home province.

We're well aware of this. That's actually one source of frustration - why companies that operate in Icelandic in Iceland (350,000 people) for some reason find it so hard to operate in French in Quebec.

The Catalans (who number 10 million) express the same frustration as us.

It's a question of respect (or disrespect). It's unfortunate it has to be that way but sometimes it seems you have to force respect.
