The John-facing window of The Cat N Fiddle says coming soon. Looking in the window you can see all the taps are in and they're finishing up the interior. Looks like a little bit of work has been done, but was dark.

Apparently there is a new bar/restaurant opening up on Augusta called Paloma. Tacos and tequila.

Glad to see Augusta return to it's former glory? I guess once someone fills the former building that was Radius, all the buildings will have restaurant/bar occupants? And now with Ciao Bella and Plank there, and the additional residents those buildings provide, it should get quite busy on weekends again.

It also looks like something is opening in the spot on John where there used to be a sushi restaurant, next to the former Gallagher's and kitty-corner to the Cat n Fiddle. Renovations have been happening, and there's a sign in the window that says "Peabody's." Anyone know anything about that?

All in all, it does seem like the Augusta area is slowly coming back to life. It would be nice to see the old Gallagher's and Radius spots reopen to book-end the strip.

Just gotta get that small parking lot on the other corner of Augusta and Hughson developed into a mid-rise mixed use and that strip will really be looking good. I'd love to see that ugly church knocked down some day as well but its not terrible I guess. Lots more ugly surface lots South of Augusta on Hughson that could become something one day as well.

A well-known Italian restaurant in downtown Hamilton has closed — but only to the public.

Last month, La Cantina Ristorante owners Maurizio and Tina Grande announced in a letter that starting in October, the eatery would undergo a “soft closing,” only opening for private bookings on prix-fixe menus and prepared meals for takeout.

“We are going on a hiatus,” read the letter, which was posted to the front door of the Walnut Street South restaurant and shared with The Spectator. “We pause and rest with the satisfaction to have always kept our namesake and operations in our family.”

I’m pretty sure it’s known something is being planned here. May be related but any development would be a ways off, I’d think.

I think it's inevitable; I'll be sad to see them go, but they've been open a long time.

That 2-tower proposal at 117 Jackson E. is just to the west. I don't know if La Cantina's property includes the entire lot that surrounds the restaurant, but together they'll be an attractive site for development of another tower.

That Petro Canada's days are probably numbered too, along with the building housing that plastics firm at Main and Walnut.

Maybe on Petro Canada as those are quite profitable and remediation isn't that attractive but at some point it will disappear, but I'd wager longer than shorter.

There could be a "Save Our [gas] Stations" campaign (SOurS), seeing as it's one of few remaining downtown. It's a refueling desert, I tell ya

Canadian Tire at Main/Victoria, the Pioneer on John just south of the GO Centre, and a small Esso at Cannon/John are the only others I can think of right downtown (?). Beyond that, one has to drive all the way west to Dundurn, or hunt for the ones scattered eastward.

Went to Cat & Fiddle last Friday for lunch.

Introductory prices (till October 20) are quite reasonable as they evaluate the initial menu (new items will come on stream after the official opening-October 20). They mentioned prices will go up (not surprising as introductory prices are a good deal based on quality). Fish & Chips 2 piece - $15, 1lb of wings $14, etc. Beer prices were not a steal unfortunately.

If the quality stays at the level I experienced with a group of friends, highly recommended in a crowded competitive neighbourhood.

Also Subway opened in the new location last week as well across from Hamilton GO Centre.

Did they do any renovations to the interior? I don't recall personally but I remember hearing the bathrooms were gnarly!

Maisy's Pearl has done lots of popups for the past few years. I'm not an oyster fan, but people who are seem to like it! It should be a good addition to the street.

Figured out that the spot on John Peabody's is going to be a small cocktail bar.

Also there's an alcohol licence application for an address just south of Argyle on Ottawa Street with the name "Malarkey".

Now if we ever figure out what's going into Gallagher's that would be a nice round out to Augusta/John. Whoever started the renovations there did some nice touches on using that frontage for maximum light but if and when that happens, who knows.
