Montreal has no Eiffel Tower, nor Big Ben, nor Roman Colosseum. Its most recognizable symbol is the Olympic Stadium. So, yes, it is the most iconic landmark in the city.

And 1 and 5000 Americans couldn't tell anything significant about Canada. They only know America (and still...).

The Olympic Stadium cannot be blown up, it would cost about 900 millions $ do demolish it.

The tower (now offices) is the most iconic part, which ironically wasn't complete until 11 years after the Olympics.

I'm in the stadium (with tower) is iconic camp. Montreal is a beautiful city, but that's the only singular structure that really stands out from the rest.

I would consider Place Ville Marie more iconic that the Big O; with its cruciform shape and rotating beacon. Plus it's a symbol of a time where Montreal was the economic and cultural hub of Canada. Though its over 60 years old, still looks fresh and modern.

It's a major symbol of the city for sure but when Montreal is represented in iconography it's usually the Big O or the Jacques-Cartier Bridge and sometimes the cross on Mt Royal that you see.

$900 million to demolish the stadium is not a number to be taken seriously. It's just a number to make the renovation costs without a major league tenant more palatable

As someone who's interested in urbanism, I agree, but I think most people don't know of Place Ville-Marie.

Honestly, I've only been to Montreal a half dozen times and I had to look up what PVM looked like. Maybe my interest in sports makes the big O come to mind more, although my first image of Montreal in my mind are the hockey stick escalators at the old Forum.

Habitat 67 is the true iconic building for Montreal.

Thanks for sharing. Lots of francophone broadcasting legends from my childhood on there: Lionel Duval, Richard Garneau, René Lecavalier. Though 1968 was too early for me to be watching.

Also note that it's billed as a colour program at the start but what we see is actually in black and white. I guess the person or outfit that was recording didn't have colour capacity.

It was quite common back in the day to have stuff available in colour but many people would still be watching in black and white on older equipment.

I have found place vill marie more iconic especially with the night time search lights. The Olympic tower is but the stadium not so much as its just a flat pancake shape

And I think that might have been the first time the tune was played, as it was published in 1968.

I think it would have been a good investment by CBC to purchase it in 2008. The Harper Government was all about history, so this would have been a good opportunity.

New Sens owner Michael Andlauer has re-iterated his desire to move the team to Ottawa. He says that all stakeholders and fans are all in alignment, and the question now is where. I think LeBreton continues to be top of the list of potential sites (they've been working with a team of renowned corporations and the NCC for over a year on this), but the Mayor continues to push for anywhere but for some incomprehensible reason, including City sites that are much too small, or sites that the City doesn't own such as occupied Federal office buildings, occupied Federal office campuses with poor transit access, Federal office towers that are on the list of surplus to be sold however, occupy a city block far too small for an arena.

I think he just hates the NCC. He's been ultra focused on killing an NCC active transportation program for Queen Elizabeth Parkway to Lansdowne above all else (like far more important things like housing, homelessness, transit, the environment). His top promise during the election campaign was "fighting the war on cars".
