According to a news article from The State Press, the new medical school at Arizona State University will be funded by ASU revenue, private investors, philanthropy, and public investment. However, according to a more recent news article from ASU News, the university’s headquarters for ASU Health, which includes a new medical school, will be privately funded.
Arizona State University and Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego confirmed that ASU will build its new medical school in downtown Phoenix. Voters will be presented with a bond on the Nov. 7 ballot that would earmark $12 million for the new medical school, Gallego said.
Last June...Crow stated - all funding would be from private sources. Sure wish he would be honest - or, make up his mind. So far, I have only seen reports of funds from the taxpayers. $30 million from the Board of Regents...and if this bond passes: $12 million. Starting from scratch - that won't get you very far. However, you have to start somewhere. What medical disciplines will be taught in the initial building that is being shown? These buildings are expensive: Two new buildings at the UofA are nearing completion - and they are running each around $100 million. That is just for brick and mortar. Andrew Weil's Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine down at the UofA is getting his own building - small - but, is also nearly completed: The construction alone is costing $23 million.
With Arizona's population growing - it seems adding 1 million every 10 years - we will be at roughly 9 million within 20 years. That is probably when asu's school will start to have an impact. However, no mention of what their school will comprise. They need to let the public know what their plans and desires are - then, start raising money.
