The renumbering happened in 1890, resulting in the elimination nearly all 00-99 street addresses. While Venice wasn't even in existence yet, let alone annexed, I've always wondered why it was able to keep its Santa Monica based numbering scheme, instead of having to toe the line and change to L.A.'s scheme. I've never been able to find any explanation.

ISTM that's very unusually, and that the overwhelming majority of annexed towns adopted L.A.'s numbering plan.

Prior to 1883, I think most address numbering, or at least with Spring Street, started at 1; the 1878 LACD has
people at 1-1/2 Spring, which would have to be just south of Temple. The 1883-84 LACD is the first to list North
and South Spring.

So, if the 34 Spring of the 1870s was on the east side of the street, it may have been just south of the old Temple
County Courthouse. Does your friend only have the address, or is there any other info (name of owner or type of
building, etc.)? I think that site would now be under the City Hall grounds.

Looking at this aerial there appear to be six survivors. (or perhaps that's all that were built. .6)

e_r, I think I noticed an NLA posting or so on the Angelus Annex, the adjacent Hulda Bldg./Block on 4th; but I was surprised to find that it was evidently floated for a moment in 1903 that the old Chamber of Commerce building, alias the Mason Bldg., at the SE corner of Broadway and 4th, be an Angelus Annex when the Chamber of Commerce vacated for its own new building:

Here's a Los Angeles snow photo I've not seen on NLA before.



People, including a sailor and two in uniform next to him, are awaiting entry to see Cab Calloway at The Orpheum Theatre, 842 S. Broadway. The photo is dated February 20, 1944.

The blade sign for the United Artists Theatre is on the right. In front of the Orpheum theatre is a poster for the 4th Bond Drive. The 4th War Loan bond drive ran in January and February of 1944.

She showed a picture of a Nazi affiliated bookstore in California. This "Aryan Book Store" seems to have moved around quite a bit, but I wonder what building this photo shows.

This 1937 CD shows Universal at 6314 Yucca and UA at 1966 S. Vermont. The bookstore has a "1004" on the front, which wouldn't be across the street from either of these.
