Taverna Greek Resto-Bar & Grill will be opening in the new year at 759 Main Street (former Dalas African Restaurant).

Greek food is very popular, but we have never really had a proper Greek sit down restaurant in the city. This should be much more successful than Dalas ever was.

"Coming soon" signage was being mounted on the front of this building this afternoon.

Over $1M has been announced for a major refurbishment of the Capitol Theatre.

The main upgrade will be to the theatre seating, which will be completely replaced. The new seats will be more comfortable, and will come with cup holders. There will be an increase in the number of wheelchair seating positions, and a number of the seats will be designed for "bariatric (overweight)" clients. The overall seating in the auditorium may go down to 770 seats from 780.

In addition to the above, a new sound console and a new LED lighting panel will also be purchased.

That is lovely news about the Capitol. This is a real gem for the city, so nice that it is receiving investment.

CBC article about the above:

Moncton theatre-goers can expect a comfier experience this time next year
Feds, province putting $710K towards Capitol Theatre project
Hannah Rudderham · CBC News · Posted: Oct 02, 2023 6:00 AM ADT | Last Updated: 5 hours ago

They make the point in the article that, while the seating will be entirely replaced, that the aesthetic of the auditorium will be maintained.

The building at Vaughan Harvey and Main Street will be six floors. Council voted today to amend the agreement with the developer. Substantial completion deadline of December 31, 2025.

And Mayor Arnold’s post on this matter confirms the leaked design of this building that we became aware of several months ago.

Even at the 6 floors, I wish they had of done more to make it a bit of a statement building. Something to stood out more. Sadly it looks like it would fit nicely in a corner between main and St.George st…

Ah that's a shame. Anyways, at this point, I'll be happy as long as Icon Infinity remains at 30 floors. I don't expect much from anything else even the 4 rumored 20ish storey projects. At least not until we hear better news about inflation costs re: construction.

the slow down can be attributed to the combination of skyrocketed interest rates, labor costs, labor availability, materials costs..

the former at least somewhat being dealt with by the Federal government removing their portion(?) of the tax on new builds?

I still think you'll see Ashford's multi-building announced soon.

I will be very happy when we do get the announcement. I was just keeping my expectations low because I was so excited for this corner to have a prominent building.

I am of course happy there's something being built to contribute to the density as opposed to remaining an empty lot. Just managing my own excitement.

There are indeed! Including John Wishart, CEO of the Moncton chamber of commerce who previously stated:

"Our Chamber is urging the developers to proceed with their original 10-storey plan."

I would say that the vast majority of the public who have an opinion on this project are very disappointed with this developer, and even with the City of Moncton who have allowed them to dwindle the building down to 6 floors.

I can actually see that happening. The current mosque - my office is on the same street - is far too small now. That being said, was never actually in Baci so can't say if the layout would suffice.

It's a very open concept space with a large - almost 2 storey - area in the middle of two 'wings'. With some renovation, I would imagine it would make a lovely Mosque! It's actually almost ideally suited to being a place of worship. Kind of amazing as my wife and I were really scratching our heads to think of a use for it other than a banquet hall.
