Six figure fines + the cost of the repair which would likely be much higher.

Many of these drivers are for-hire, meaning they do operate under the name of a trucking company but they own the truck. It's not a cheap venture because a transport truck these days costs $90K or more but it allows for loopholes such as establishing driver permit approvals and inspection certifications in other regions where ICBC can't enforce. Think of it like how you can rack up plate tolls in the states and then come back to BC, where ICBC will not disclose your billing address to an international entity. Likewise it can help to mask that a driver is already suspended in another region.
You can fine the trucking company but they can just shake off the driver rather than keeping them around as a liability, they just pop up elsewhere under a new team. You have to directly go after the driver, which starts to off-balance the punishment for the infraction because slapping one person with a five-figure penalty on a driving incident looks bad.

You usually see people entering the country, going out of province to obtain a commercial license (it is very easy to obtain) and returning to BC with these credentials. Even then, it's well known that the industry sees unlicensed drivers getting into the vehicles. Commercial drivers are often swapping or fleeing the scenes of motor vehicle accidents.

Honestly, there seems to be a hesitancy in going after the industry in any capacity. The fines are merely the cost of doing business and do little to deter any practices. That I feel is partially due to the country needing these truck drivers, but also the potential racial aspect of potentially targeting the South Asian community.

And the companies suspension was lifted.

https://vancouver.citynews.ca/2023/09/27/bc-truck-overpass-suspension-lifts

Lesson here is to just flee if you damage property while intoxicated or unlicensed....

I don't think anyone has mentioned it, but they are currently building the northbound bus hop lane at Willingdon and Kingsway. It is surprising how much space there actually is to accommodate it.

A small step towards eventual six-laning of Willingdon Avenue. Hopefully it will be part of Purple Line construction.

Looks like a nice open space to set up a tent city.

thats insane. no consequences. they should have been banned from ever being allowed to drive again. literally driving without the licenses and then running away from the scene of the crime on top of it. holy 🞵🞵🞵🞵. then the many many many $$$ in damage.

disgusting. how the hell can there be worse penalties for driving 110 over the Alex Fraser Bridge vs driving INTO a bridge WITHOUT the licenses required and then FLEEING the scene. absolutely disgusting.

Regarding the question of what will the city do with the land freed up by removing the overpass to the port.

Answer: Create two muddy fields one north of the lane, and one south.

I was under the impression that a big impetus to suspend their license was that they wouldn't release the name of the driver. The fact that they reinstated the license suggests that they relented on that.

If it turns out that the fault lies solely or mostly with the driver (i.e., it was his choice to use that route), reinstating the company's license wouldn't be all that unexpected, IMHO.

B.C. transport company back on the road after being slapped with 'strongest deterrent' from overpass collision

Quote:
It's been more than a week since a truck's trip came to an abrupt end after hitting an overpass in North Vancouver, and the province slapped the company responsible with what it calls the strongest deterrent to a worrying trend of overpass collisions by commercial vehicles in the past two years.

...

"We've imposed really the strongest deterrent that we could," he told reporters as he expressed indignation and exasperation over the incidents. "It will send a message to the industry, there's no question about it."

But according to the transportation ministry, the suspension was lifted Sept. 27 following an "action plan" agreed to by the company and the province. Violation tickets were also issued.

...

"We are still looking to speak to the driver," North Vancouver RCMP Const. Mansoor Sahak told CBC News in an email Thursday.

On Friday, Fleming said the company is co-operating with police and has identified the driver to investigators.

"We'll let the justice system take its course," he said. He added that harsh penalties, like licence suspensions, will be part of any future overpass strike.

...

Fleming says the province is working on legislation due this fall that will increase penalties for companies found liable for incidents like overpass strikes.

He also said the province would seek to recover the full cost of damage to infrastructure over and above what is provided by a company's insurance.

I could be missing something, and unless I misread the morning news show text crawl, weren't they only fined something like $3600?

No idea how much they were fined - just that it was "the strongest deterrent that we could". With any luck this will cause the penalties to have some actual teeth to them.

BC Highway #1 has seen another accident practically shutdown the highway near the Cape Horn Interchange (2 out of 3 lanes are closed). It's always the same instance of people rushing to change multiple lanes into the HOV lane.

This is actually the 4th day in a row of an accident in the AM rush near that area.

No surprises there. The "Hwy 1 Gauntlet" between Surrey and Chilliwack is my least favourite stretch of road in BC.

Now that there's momentum to expand the highway, I really, really, really hope they fast track the expansion to Chilliwack. It was needed two decades ago.

The Cape Horn interchange isn't between Surrey and Chilliwack though, it's in Coquitlam on the other side of the Port Mann.

Ah right. That's for the clarification. I just assumed it was between Chilliwack and Surrey as that's where I've been stuck for an hour or more due to accidents.

A lot of high speeds between Burnaby and Surrey on Hwy 1. I've had people fly by me going 140km/h-150km/h regularly.
