Just to be clear, this is all VERY FAR from my ideal transit system. In the Netherlands, transit is exceptional but the further from the core, the more you walk (or for them, cycle). But the buses almost always run on time.
Would you rather wait an hour in the winter for a bus that may not even show up, or every 20 minutes for a guaranteed bus 350 metres farther away. I stay warmer walking than standing waiting for a no-show bus.
Lastly, get rid of the bus stop every 100 metres (or less in many parts of the city). With obvious exceptions such as seniors centres etc.
Any savings (and there won't be much if any) can be reinvested in para-transpo or other last mile solutions for those that are mobility challenged.
