Regina downtown is, like many others is in big trouble. Office space demand is contracting since COVID. Retail is being crushed by online sales and inflation. No one wants to live downtown. Downtown condo prices are in the tank. Hotel demand remains weak. Restaurants are in crisis due to inflation, COVID recovery and labour shortages. I cannot see private construction downtown for many years. All that is left is government/institutional. That is not sustainable in the long run.

Hill Tower 4 isn't going to happen any time soon. The office vacancy rate is currently around 17% in Regina.

The only near-term future for that lot is either a weed filled field surrounded by temporary fencing, or a gravel Impark lot

Subsidized housing would be the only viable market right now and that land is far too expensive and highly taxed. To me the best medium term outcome would be as a temporary extension of the Plaza.

Demo should start soon if it hasn't already. Around 1 pm they had wood cribbing down to protect the paving stones and several demo excavators and a huge dumpster.

Story indicated they are waiting for water to be shutoff before they get going in earnest. I might head over there this evening (they were shutting down for the evening just as I got there, I think they had been lifting a few things off the roof). Finally something that made me interested in going downtown.

Design tender posted for the section of Inland Drive between Winnipeg and Fleet to support future development including the Viterra crushing plant. One of the documents mentions that the stretch is now under control of the Ministry of Highways so work is out of the city / RM's hands / budgeting process. Looks like they want roundabouts at Winnipeg, Fleet and 1 location in between.

Roundabout for Viterra site access would be tendered first. Winnipeg Street potentially the following year. Fleet Street some time after that.

The document mentions that the design is to help identify land that would need to be acquired and utilities to be relocated so it could be a few years before any actual work starts. It appears to focus just on the intersections, whether the road would get additional lanes would be decided later.

Moonlight Movies looking to open discount theatre in Regina

In October, the Golden Mile Shopping Centre is expected to welcome Moonlight Movies Cinemas, a discount movie theatre.

It plans to set up shop at the former location of Rainbow Cinemas, which closed down in September of 2022.

Jason Longworth and his partner have experience managing movie theatres. They’ve been running drive-ins for about a decade, including the one in Pilot Butte.
