I have 3 tech friends moving to Calgary because that is where the action is.

The article reinforces that.

Not good news for Edmonton.

I wonder how soon will they will be moving back due to the higher cost of housing?

Why is it when someone points a flaw of Edmonton, the boosters always get their backs against the wall and write some lame comments a la 'i know you are, but what am i?'

seriously, can't we admit the city does not do a good job attracting PRIVATE business? that we COULD and SHOULD do better/ demand better of our civic leaders?

Because some people keep writing flaws about Edmonton on a daily basis.
Or Calgary this Calgary that…so maybe they should move there. It’s a nice city too, and maybe they can find peace living there.

'^maybe you and others should get your heads out of the sand and see the reality on the ground.

Highly paid professionals are leaving this city because Edmonton is doing a terrible job attracting business.

They see better opportunities, a better lifestyle and are willing to pay for it.

If you say so. I know lots of people in Edmonton making 100K+
People should leave if they don’t like it here

Not really a true statement at all. If you look job prospects are good in this city with many companies looking for professionals from ATB to Epcor.

In fact there would be no city, no matter what ad campaign or city council bribed some business owner to locate here!

Old University of Seattle Building

Hey all,
Curious if anyone knows anything about the old University of Seattle building next to the Matrix hotel. Looks like it’s completely empty.

So the 3 persons I refer to are all in tech. 1 is a director, 1 is a manager and 1 is an IT tech. The director is moving because of better business opportunities and better flight connections. The manager is moving because of
better recreational facilities ie closer to the mountains and has a job already in Calgary. The IT tech is moving because his wife has a high paying job lined up in Calgary and he has a job of his own lined up.

Real life situations and I could probably give you a few more people I know.

Edmonton remains a bargain. It's a place to live where you have an excellent amount of disposable income, not a place to flip through property like it's an investment.

I'm starting to appreciate that more and more.

IT jobs are good for any city. But they can be relocated at a whim. Today they’re in Calgary, tomorrow they’ll be shifted to Vancouver, TO, Montreal, or outside Canada.
Wherever the work can get done cheaper.

Relocated at a whim? Sorry, but things are not quite as easy to pack up and move as you might think. If what you are saying was even remotely true, you could say the same about any white collar jobs these days.

It's bizarre that there is a (perceived) race to become a more expensive city. It's not a sign of anything good, maybe at the surface but it's just superficial.

Edmonton has been for quite some time, and likely will be for quite some time, the less desirable of the two cities. It's not like it's by a large large margin anyways. Edmonton and its people are comfortable in their own skin and know exactly why they live here vs living in our neighbor to the south. We could do better, but not in as much as a rush as other cities

So it sounds like people are moving to Calgary for opportunity/lifestyle/family reasons which is likely similar to the 25,000-30,000 or so people that moved to Edmonton and area last year. Man, your posts, something else I tell ya
