dtla was in an increasing free fall starting over 60 yrs ago, so what's happening to sections of SF today is both more disturbing....since SF historically has had more advantages than dtla has....but also familiar territory to LA. DTLA saw stores & businesses closing up or moving out of it going back over 30 yrs. Urban areas are at risk if they take good things for granted.

Ennismore and partner Shivom LLC, today announced the signing of Mama Shelter Downtown LA, set to open in 2026. The second Mama Shelter hotel in the city comes following the success of Mama Shelter LA, which opened in May 2015 in Hollywood.

Transforming the existing Mart South Building in Downtown LA, the new Mama Shelter will boast 149 keys, including 145 standard rooms and four suites in Mama's signature sassy and flamboyant style. A haven for people of all ages, Mama Shelter Downtown LA will offer three festive F&B outlets to party and play with an all-day dining restaurant and café on the ground floor and a rooftop bar and terrace overlooking the city. Guests at the hotel will also have access to and use of an on-site fitness centre and parking garage.

With its rich fashion industry legacy, California Market Center (CMC), adjacent to the hotel, has long been an iconic DTLA destination for premier events. Additionally, Santee Alley, one of the most popular shopping corridors in Los Angeles, and the Los Angeles Flower District, the largest flower marketplace in the United States, are within walking distance from Mama Shelter Downtown LA.

It is; I've been down there recently.

Your location indicates you're in downtown LA, right? Maybe you could do this for us.

I went by earlier this morning. A guy told me the same as the other guy I approached about a month ago, and that it was going to be 54 stories. This guy today didn’t know the height…he said he was installing the HVAC. But as I mentioned before, the first guy I met about a month ago said it would be 54 stories, but would have additional height with the crown. I’ll try again tomorrow and see if I run into someone that knows the height. I wasn’t going to just stand out there lurking until someone walked out. Lol.

Thanks for doing that!

54 stories would be consistent with the lower height of 590 ft, per the elevations on the City web site. Still, 590 ft. is nothing to shake a stick at, especially where it will be located on the skyline. Not 760 ft., obviously, but will still have a substantial impact.

590' will still have an impact on the Southpark skyline, and it will be about the same height as the other Onni tower on Hill.

Just spoke to a worker and he said their estimate is anywhere between 587 and 597ish. He said you can add or delete another foot from those numbers as fas as the final product.

Thanks for the update! They should add a few feet to bring it to 600 feet.

Thanks for checking, scania!

I'll go ahead and update the main project thread and put in a request to update the title.

Just went to DTLA (stayed at the Intercontinental) and it's so sad how Oceanwide looks - also there looked to be a few very dangerous pieces of (something) hanging off the top of the largest tower

People are suggesting that the Oceanwide Project is becoming symbolic of what Downtown Los Angeles is becoming.... But they were from Portland.

Oceanwide is an aberration. We can all think of several towers that were started and completed while Oceanwide remained the husk that it is. South Park is booming.

There are 2 additional smaller projects south/west of Pico between Hope and Flower that are about as complete as Oceanwide and are also completely abandoned now. They are all tagged and getting destroyed by looters and the elements. South Park is not booming.

If someone stays at the Intercontinental and that’s all they noticed was Oceanwide, they are either lying or their intent was to say and feel negative about LA. And that’s simply a personal issue. I personally wouldn’t put much thought or emotion to that person says.

This seems like a much more consequential push than before. Also, LA has enver made such an official push. If anything, we (and SF) LIMIT such development.

Mama Shelter

https://la.urbanize.city/post/dtla-mama-shelter-hotel-slated-open-2026

This is really cool and awesome for DTLA. Me and a few friends just had drinks at Mama Shelter in Hollywood for Sunday Funday. I can see this location in DTLA being very popular! I’ve already heard a few people talking about Mama Shelter coming downtown.
