A bit early in the morning for such vigorous pot-stirring isn't it? Hopefully you at least stretched first.

What is it with you and Montreal? You almost never contribute to the forum, but once a while who make the effort to come out of your basement to gratuitously bash Montreal for no reason except some weird resentment about the city versus Toronto. Explain to me.

The resentment was coming out of Montreal. Uh oh, Toronto is blowing us out of the water, quick we better come up with something!!...yeah so, your new big towers are just ugly blue boxes!! they'll never compete with all of our layers of stub!!

Now all I'm seeing is blue stub.

Also, I didn't know I had it out for Montreal. I don't remember posting about the place before. Usually it's about BC

so what’s the issue ? You want Montreal to get a swirling tower ? LOL no thanks …no matter how many new towers Montreal gets, there will always be some sort of hate towards the city….cause y’all can’t do it like Montreal :p …. Even if Montreal gets 5 300m towers, there will still be trash talk …. So F U to all of you.

What's the tower being built at the back of some of those Montreal skylines? The one that has an American/Sears Tower-ish shape?

I continue to believe Montreal has the best skyline in terms of historical layering. New towers have a good mix of background "boring" towers and some with more interesting architectural features. You need that mix, otherwise you get a London where everything is competing for attention.

Toronto's impressive in its shear size and bulk, but nothing stands out anymore, almost like an Asian City, a faceless Global City. You zoom in on some details. In many ways, I preferred it in the 90s and 2000s when the Financial District stood out.

Just too bad those height restrictions won't allow two or three towers to reach a few dozen extra meters. It's not like the Mont Royale is visible.

Pointing out I used to see endless posts about Toronto and its blue boxes, Montreal forumers seemed to care the most. Now I look at Montreal and I'm seeing walls of blue condos, just a lot stubbier.

The "blue boxes" trend is everywhere, from Toronto to Montreal to Hudson Yards. It's not so much colour as it is opacity -- contemporary buildings' focus on transparency causes them to blend into each other and their surroundings. The '60s, '70s and '80s giants were much more distinct from each other with their different cladding styles.

Montreal doesn't look very similar to Toronto though, and the trend is already shifting away to white/black and brick buildings, so Montreal will probably start to get different buildings before it's oversaturated with the glass boxes.

I guess it's natural to compare cities but I find a lot of comparisons in Canada are strained. There just aren't that many cities in total and the country covers millions of square kilometers and many distinct regions so with a few exceptions if you pick 2 different cities of any size they're likely pretty distinct in a North American context. It is not like the USA where there are dozens of million-plus person metro areas with clusters in different regions.

I have not seen this in person since these new buildings have been built but it looks pretty nice, but it wouldn't be allowed in a lot of higher density planning areas. Wide street, no tower setbacks, too tall of a street wall.

You wouldn't want a city to be 100% like this but it should be part of the planning vocabulary.

It's not that, it's that there is a pretty longstanding trend towards high-translucence glass treatments. Buildings like the National Bank tower in Montreal, the CIBC buildings in Toronto, Salesforce in San Francisco, IFC in Hong Kong, Torre Cristal in Madrid -- you name it -- all have this in common.

It's not just the fact of the glass cladding, either -- older glass towers like the TD Centre, IDS in Minneapolis or Water Tower Place in Chicago are more differentiated, never mind things like First Canadian Place's white marble or Scotiabank's red granite.

That wide boulevard with a linear park used to be an elevated expressway like the Gardiner.
