I knew the height would be brought up!! Here we are trying to punch a hole in the rental vacancy issue and we have NIMBYs in city hall, where the heck did this planner come from?, who haven't come to realize that height helps density, and Jeff Lantz said it, that the urban density and height needs to change to accommodate this urgent rental issue. Ten floors isn't high!! We have buildings already that high! In fact a garbage building at the Riverside Dr is going to be as high. So we'll have a place for garbage ten stories high but not for people to live. Makes sense in this stupid city!
---- UPDATE ----

Well, someone is sending negative vibes back from the city against the height of this project. How the height would impact anyone I'm not sure but 10 storeys would give adequate vacancies into the future. We have a 10 storey hotel and soon a 10 storey garbage building but we're not allowed to have 10 storey apartments. Get real!
Here is the latest, and someone at city hall opposed this, that convinced the developer to cut two floors,

From a Calvary Church media release:

".......One of the questions that was raised from the last update was if we go from 10 stories to eight stories......"

Looks like it's eight stories for now......do I hear six or four stories!! It wouldn't surprise me. The future is moving upon us fast and we need to go up so why quibble over two stories! Who's behind this?

Was in Summerside yesterday and got a few pics from around my hometown!
The new Tops to Floors building next to superstore.

The New Honda dealership on Central Street.

A new apartment building near the hospital.

The new hotel attached to Credit Union Place.

APPROVED

231 Richmond Street,
That the decision pertaining to the demolition permit for 231 Richmond Street (PID #340703), NOT be reconsidered.

This is good news as another of Andrea Battison's frivolous IRAC appeals has been tossed out. Now can we stop listening to this person and get on with the apartment developments.

Thanks for the picture on the new Honda dealership.
As for the apartment building by the hospital, I hope they'll do better than the apartments on Water St (see below). According to my son, a coworker of his lives there and they are having issues filling it. Probably rental prices!

This was released by the Atlantic Provinces Economic Council back in Jan 2023.

Halifax’s population topped 480,000 in July 2022, growing 4.5 per cent since July 2021. Halifax was the second fastest-growing city in the country, behind Moncton, N.B., which saw its population jump by 5.4 per cent.

Charlottetown’s population grew by 4.2 per cent between July 2021 and July 2022, reaching almost 87,000. The city had the third-highest growth of major Canadian cities in 2022 and was the fastest-growing city between 2016 and 2021. (The estimate population has grown another 4.0%+ making it over 90,000 over the last year 2022-23.)

The population in St. John’s, N.L. grew 2.3 per cent between July 2021 and July 2022 to 219,000. That is a larger increase than the city saw throughout the entire period from 2016 to 2021.

Additionally, Fredericton saw its population grow by 3.3 per cent between July 2021 and July 2022, reaching over 116,000, more than double the average annual population growth from 2016 to 2022.

P.E.I. population crossed 180K mark, Statistics Canada projects

by Tarini Fernando, Shane Ross ·
CBC News PEI ·
Posted: Aug 21, 2023 5:18 PM ADT

Population increased by record 7,000 people in 2022

If the current growth rate continues, P.E.I. could reach the 200,000 population mark by late 2026 or early 2027, according to a Statistics Canada analyst. (Steve Bruce/CBC)

Charlottetown may reach that CMA status before we know it.
Let's get building!
No wonder there is a housing crisis in Charlottetown. Why do they move here? According to an article on the same population issues in Halifax, immigrants and others are tired of the fast paced life and want to take on a slower paced life style.

Major renovations underway at VAC

Department headquarters in Charlottetown receiving a $93.1-million facelift

by DAVE STEWART
THE GUARDIAN
Charlottetown, P.E.I.

A major renovation project has begun at the headquarters for Veterans Affairs Canada in Charlottetown.

......Public Services and Procurement Canada to gut the inside of the building. The project is designed to renovate and modernize the entire inside of the five-story building.....

They didn't think this one through very well. According to the article after the reno 900 people will work there, nearly double the original amount. Why they don't add another six or seven floors to allow all of the employees to be under one roof is beyond me. There are eight separate locations around the city that harbour DVA satellite offices. $93 million should be able to even build a new building. The UPEI residence cost $63 million. What a waste of money!

Simmons Rink Update

The Simmons rink is moving along with the rink which is covered and the swimming pool is nearing completion and soon to be closed in.
The parking lot is partially finished with more parking area being added after the old Simmons is torn down.

This rink should be nominated for the most ugly building in town…my God, $30M and that’s the best we can do?

There was a change in the rendering I guess. It originally was supposed to look like below. How it went from that to what we have now without a review I'm not sure. Apparently the slots outside of the building are suppose to light up at night with the present build. They probably figured that would settle anyones concern over any question of ugliness in its final result. They should have stuck with the original rendering.

Twenty-eight (28) letters were sent out to property owners within a 100-metre radius of the subject property as per the
Zoning & Development Bylaw dated August 24th, 2023. As of Thursday, August 31, 2023 at 4:00 PM, no letter of support or objection has been received.

The Public Meeting was held Wed, Sept 6th with no opposition received.

I hope the roof line changes. I can say a good Fiona type storm might like to get under the eaves and give it a good lift. It already happened to other buildings that had these roofs.

Downtown Summerside has released a photo of a new building going “downtown” called The Regent. The building will be 5 floors, 40 residential units with 10,000 sq. Ft. of ground floor commercial.

And they say they'll have a fall start. I don't know who the developer is but good luck in finding workers because Charlottetown has over 3000+ units to build and they can't get
any of those started because of the lack of workers. If this does go this fall then something is wrong.
