Most staff will pay for parking. Aside from the security aspect already mentioned, a few parking tickets easily makes up the difference and there is a lot of 2 hour parking around the hospital. I’m not sure what the future rates will be, but current staff parking costs are quite low compared to most paid lots in the city and they offer prorated rates for part time and casual staff as well as cheaper passes for evenings and weekends. A lot of staff already rent spots from nearby residents for significantly more than the rates the hospital charges staff. There’s something like 3,500 staff working at RGH. I’m sure not everyone will want to pay whatever the increase will be, but I don’t think they’ll have problems selling parking.
I am curious as to whether it will change the staff shuttle they have during the week. It works quite well for Monday to Friday staff or those who work 8 hour shifts and includes evening and weekend parking at the hospital. If you work 12 hour shifts and end up staying late or are working a swing shift, it can be ineffective because of the hours it runs (I believe the last shuttle leaves the hospital around 9). It’s also extremely frustrating when you miss it by a few minutes and have to wait for the next one because it doesn’t run as often in the evening and not all shifts start and end at the same time.
