Article in the NYT today about SLC's growth. Only interesting news tidbit for us is that the Domain tower on West Temple is alluded to as still happening.

Quote:
Ms. Davidson manages operations at the Shop, a co-working space that is part of a $130 million downtown complex known as the Exchange, Domain’s first project in the city. Domain is also developing a $320 million project nearby, and Mr. Schwartz said he hoped to develop other projects in the city.

It's been awhile since the name popped up, but from my understanding, we're supposed to be getting news on the Telosa "city of the future" thingy at some point this month. The diaper billionaire guy who brained it up said they would announce a location in September of 2023. In addition to that, the IOC was supposed to be meeting this month to announce the host of the 2030 Winter Olympics. I'm not sure if that's still happening this month, but it's customary for them to announce the host 7 years in advance (although these past few years have been a little unorthodox with their schedules). So we could be getting two major news drops this month, or it could be a double dud. Guess we'll see over these next few weeks

It has been announced.

The name was changed to "Utah City" and the plans were downgraded significantly.

Comrade, and his clown posse will be the new mayor and city council respectively.

There is obviously no relationship between the random 'telosa' thing proposed by some billionaire and Vineyard's masterplan (utah city) lol ? am I missing something

Utah city is awesome and will probably be far better than Daybreak - as renowned urbanist Jeff Speck is involved. I think Vineyard will receive significant and even national recognition, at the very least within planning and development circles, if successful. It is not without shortcomings but I think it will be far better planning than what we are used to

I think you’re right there is no relationship between the two. I agree with you about Utah City looking pretty awesome and well planned out. Excited to see it develop over time.

I have to agree with you, at least in part Mstar. I think at street level and the mid portion of The Cinq will be pretty attractive. That west upper portion exposed as it is sticks out like a sore thumb. Yikes, what's the east corner going to look like? The artist's renderings gave the siding a much richer more substantial look. In reality, they need to add something at that upper corner area that doesn't make it look like a cheap afterthought. Even a large public art mural enveloping a decent-sized portion of the corner from top to bottom would help. There are a lot of talented and inexpensive U. of U. students out there who would love to be able to add something like that to their portfolio. These public artworks that have been popping up on many of the new developments can make a very positive difference aesthetically. Case in point, those blank ends on the north and west of the new Hyatt could really use something.

Another thought, even just staining with an interesting pattern on some of the portions of the upper gray section with the same patina as the bottom could make a big positive difference.

New BSL article about the latest RDA concepts for Station Center:

SLC RDA has a new pitch for Station Center. Taller heights (like 40 stories) are in the mix

Disappointed in the lack of Rio Grande Plan engagement here, although nothing proposed here necessarily precludes it except the possibility of building out the Green Loop before the train box has a chance:
Quote:
Ashley Ogden, a senior project manager with the RDA, told the advisory committee that the agency would be willing to invest in the 500 West Green Loop before other sections of the Downtown system are built out.

I think you explained why - it's very limited actual news.

Hope more comes of it.

Article Bump - Latest office-to-residential conversion to begin construction on South Temple

Luke Garrott Reporting: Full Article @ https://buildingsaltlake.com/latest-offi...rsion-to-begin-construction-on-s-temple/

Several weeks ago we reported on the 14-floor HK Tower that will be part of a new 260-unit residential development at 100 South and 500 E.

Two blocks away, at 348 E. South Temple, another architecturally-significant office building is undergoing conversion. Built for IBM in 1960, the structure’s outstanding feature, its three stories of repeating concrete arches, will front a new structure and offer 182 new units Downtown...

I saw yesterday that they have already started moving dirt for this one.

I also noticed a ton of "Rocky" signs all over the city. If he ends up back in, he'll stop development faster than you can say the name "Comrade".

I have been a sceptic of Erin, but it is clear she wants to make the city the premier town along the Wasatch.

Vote for Erin.

You're preaching to the choir Ironweed. Any kind of politics aside, I remember all too well when those involved in city government in the inner offices were nooo fans of Rocky, to say the least.

In any business community of any kind, it doesn't take long to understand who are those you want to work with and those who are very difficult and rub everyone the wrong way. I'm sure we could find negatives with any politician no matter what their political stripes, but Rocky well that's a whole elevated level. So far there are pluses and minuses with Erin, but she cares passionately about Salt Lake, and importantly she doesn't burn bridges with her inner office or political counterparts at the State and County level. I do like many of her initiatives. I would say she is one of my few favorites since Deedee Corradini.

I voted Erin four years ago but she's been a failure. I definitely am not big on Rocky but anyone is better than four more years of Erin's incompetence.

I think I agree with this. I have a few friends and who feel like Comrade, and I am not exactly a fan of Mendenhall either, but I'll take her over any of the other Mayors we've had during my lifetime. She at least seems to be able to work with people, make necessary changes and move projects forward.

Rocky is far too divisive. Agreed she's not perfect, but Erin works well with others, and most importantly the state.

Since this could potentially affect development, I feel like its an appropriate conversation for this forum.

I got to stay at the Hyatt Regecy over the weekend. It's pretty nice! These pictures were taken from the window by the elevators on the 25th floor. FYI, you don't need a room key to access the elevators, so anyone can go and see this view

Haha, there was quite a bit of glare at night and you can see me watching over the city like and overlord...

Erin is weak. She doesn't so much work well with people and more just gets steamrolled. Hell, I'd take Jackie over her. She's been a complete failure as mayor and not someone I trust to lead the city heading into a crucial moment where homeless is the defining issue and likely the potential relocation of the Jazz to the suburbs.

But I suspect she'll win. Utah in general has a history of rewarding mediocrity with its elected officials and it's rare an incumbent, even one as divisive as say Rocky, or as big of a failure as Erin, loses.

Speaking of the election, according to the city's campaign finance reporting system, Michael Valentine has raised $225 since the start of his campaign, $110 of which was contributed by himself. That's compared to $228,000 by Rocky and $578,000 for Mendenhall.

Michael could raise more money holding out a hat under the City Creek pedestrian bridge.
