^ It seems like no matter what the highway project is, there is always some weird local quirk that drives up the cost to a multiple of what it would cost in another province...

I wonder if it is feasible to maintain the existing alignment for EB traffic and build just the WB lanes north of Barren? Accesses to Barren might get a little wonky but at least you only need to clear the ROW for two lanes instead of four.

I’ve been thinking the same thing too.
As for the access, the causeway probably needs to be replaced by a bridge, in which case the cottages are accessible from PTH-301 under the bridge.

Anyway, whatever you can think of, email to the engineers in charge of that project (as long as we don’t get anymore cross roads or traffic lights)

LOL yes, that would be the classic Manitoba situation. Some cottage road will require the construction of a traffic circle. With traffic lights. And it will cost $100 million.

Lots of great stuff the last few pages.

Totally agree - no brainer to go the north-of-Barren route … with both eastbound & westbound carriageways.

Is the Ontario section to the Kenora by-pass really going to be complete in 2024 ? (Dengler ?)

Is this a new by-pass of PLP ?

Edit:
Never mind - I assume it’s related to this:

Thought I'd share this link. I haven't been on the MTI site in a while. But this is updated with a concise list of projects and studies they have ongoing.
Thanks for the link (I have it bookmarked now)

I don’t see anything about the ridiculous round-a-bout at the junction of #1 & #16. I hope that means its off the table and a proper interchange is now the plan.

Zero chance for the complete length of roadway from the border to Kenora. The first 6 km that is under construction will be complete by 2024.

I’ve come across a 2nd-hand source that MTO wanna twin segment 2 in a year or two. I’m a bit surprised because I haven’t heard the area F.N. say anything.

MB's crappy highways

Great commentary about the abysmal state of Manitoba highways from a professional truck driver.

Commentary starts at 1:22:00.

3-2-1, waiting for the excuses from the MB folks.

Drove from WPG to Killarney last week via 3, 23 and 18. Very nice.

Drove back to WPG on 2, and the road was — by Elm Creek.

Hwy 18 south of 3 is a nightmare. I don't think it has been redone since 1960.

317 from 59 (libau) and Lac Du Bonnet sure has taken beating over the last few years. Will definitely need work done. Shoulders arent paved in parts and are crumbling.

There are zero excuses. I don't think you'll find any excuses in here. Just blame on previous Governments for not spending money on highways.,

I would agree there has been neglect with MB's highway infrastructure by past governments of all political stripe. Plus, when something is done, it's done to such a low standard. It is somewhat comical when a conversion of an intersection to an interchange on an existing low standard expressway is perceived to be a major feat of engineering.

On this forum and in the media, excuses for the poor state of Manitoba's highways have included climate, soil, the terrain being flat, etc.

Given Manitoba's geographical position, it should be a logistics hub. But it's not. That's been ceded to Alberta; primarily Calgary which is a distribution/logistics hub for Western Canada. As an example, Amazon has four fulfillment centres in Alberta.

^ Alberta has nearly triple Manitoba's population and 10x the GDP. I'm no logistics expert but I think that will make a bigger difference than the condition of highways.

^ climate and soil are valid excuses. At least in terms of higher construction costs, higher maintenance costs and potentially lower lifespans in comparison to other areas of the country or continent.

Ultimately it all comes down to $$, but it's foolhardy to think Province X can build a highway for $$, so MB should automatically be able to do the same. It's almost never an apples to apples comparison.

Climate would be relevant if one is comparing MB to Southern California. So it's climate when MB-75 is falling apart and when one crosses an invisible line, I-29 is good shape?
