It is not going to avoid it. It will be a disaster if it gets built at all. I am just waiting for the province to announce that it is going to cost much more than thought and they are going to cancel it until they can afford it.

How so?

I can see the provincial government using the funding argument to pull the plug (though that would fly in the face of their continued support for their estimated-to-be-far-over-initially-projected-cost Ontario Line pet project, and other infrastructure projects that are in planning). But not based on the case for successfully building and operating it.

KW's experience hasn't been that of Ottawa, nor does ours need to be.

You might need to get up to date. This pretty much already happened. The hurdles here are ironically not concerning the construction of the LRT Line. If anything, they are speculatively political and/or finding a way to get the underground utilities done. If the province is trying to wait this out and cry 'inflation!' the Feds, City and by extension the entire NDP (thanks to our near-comatose mayor's affiliation) will rally in support of Hamilton. Ford tried to avoid building outside his party territory here and elsewhere before; it didn't work.

The project's simplicity has also made it easy to push off; this is effectively Metrolinx asking one person to do utilities (the hard part), and the other to build another Finch W or Hurontario LRT- this is very simple. Neither project has faced any physical hurdles, only politics.

I’m guessing one of the first things they’ll do for the construction is converting Main to 2-way, to prevent congestion issues?

King St to Wentworth is next summer, Wentworth to Dundurn 2025. Scheduled with a resurfacing of Main at the same time, I believe.

The next LRT sub-committee is scheduled for September 25 - I imagine we will see the LRT drawings then.

That would be wonderful.

There are stretches of Main that are horrible -- Walnut to just past Sherman, for example, which is really rough by that plaza with the No Frills at Tisdale. Not quite what Barton was like Parkdale to Woodward, but it would not be long before achieving something similar to that.

My understanding is that they are doing Main St from Dundurn to Delta in one go next summer.

Even better! The 2022 budget had the capital spend in 2 parts, one in 2024 and one in 2025, which is where I was getting that info. If that has changed, all the better.

To be honest they haven't released much information on what is actually happening yet. Unless I missed an agenda item at Public Works.

Main Street was rebuilt back in the early 90’s and they planned on rebuilding it in the mid 2020’s to the early 2030’s. About 10 to 12 years ago, they decided that the road needed to be replaced around the mid 20’ and was placed in the 10-year capital budget around 2014. Every year this creeps up closer to the top of the list and is voted on by counsel. It is just 2 lines in an over 600-page document. One line for 2024 and one line for 2025.

Update the sewers, water, remove the old road and replace it with a new base and road, sidewalks etc. I believe this is a $25-30 million project. This goes from the 403 to the Delta. (or maybe just Gage Ave.) The present road has met its life expectancy.

Gotcha. Looking forward to that as someone who drives down it everyday. It's falling apart.

Come to think of it, King Street through downtown especially between James and Bay is absolutely terrible now. That LRT construction can't start soon enough.

The only thing on the agenda is a staff presentation on different potential operating models. No sign of the long-promised update on the design.

I might try reaching out directly to staff to see if I can get more information. A bit disappointed that we haven't seen anything after it was mentioned back in June or July that we'd be getting something at the next meeting and 2 or 3 meetings have passed without anything related to design or alignment.
