The Chief Administrative Officer has just said during the meeting that the developer is getting closer to construction starting and is looking forward to construction starting this fall.

In fairness he said the same thing in March in regards to the summer construction season

Stuff is getting more expensive to build right now. Affecting bottom lines.

Stuff is getting built in Fredericton, Moncton, Halifax and in other parts of the City. Someone’s bottom line is impeding progress on the development of a major public asset in which governments invested millions to allow catalytic development to occur. Something is very wrong with this picture.

Couldn’t agree more. This is arguably the best and last piece of undeveloped land on the east coast and we are sitting here waiting on a minor developer to get his act together. Developers should be lined up to build. Reminiscent of the “I can’t get transformers” excuse.

The property wasn’t turned over to the developer yet. Who knows, maybe they are just as anxious and frustrated. Or maybe they won’t accept property until it’s developable which I think I’d do the same. Whole point is nobody knows but we should know because of the tens of millions of tax dollars thrown at this.

Now the Telegraph Journal is reporting that construction is beginning this fall. Hopefully this time it will actually happen. Again keep in mind this whole time the city hasn't turned over the site to the developer because they still had their site prep work to do. So I don't think the blame should be entirely on the developer.

I understand the site work has been done for quite some time. Why it hasn’t been turned over to the “developer” is a big mystery for some reason. I have heard speculation that the developer hasn’t accepted the property as he would then have to start paying property taxes and begin development and he’s not ready. Again, as was mentioned, with the 10s of millions of tax dollars poured into this, the city needs to be fully transparent….which they have not been.

At last night's council meeting, the CAO confirmed phase 1 of Fundy Quay will begin this fall!

This project will boost this year's housing starts by 110 units.

Interesting (and a bit disappointing) to see the start is said to be a 6 story building rather than the 16 floor tower that was originally scheduled to be first.

It is disappointing, but somewhat mitigated by the fact this will be a high quality build like Queens Marque in Halifax. It definitely adds to Saint John’s biggest strength compared to other cities and that’s having beautiful and inspiring spaces (thanks to be surrounded by water on all edges of city and rapid expansion when architecture was king).

Good to hear there is somewhat of a timeline but the fact that they are storing every single pallet of materials for the public portion in the place where the first building is suppose to start, tells me they aren't getting started anytime soon.

There is a lot of activity on site this week, I noticed that there is rebar in place in the northwest corner for the Harbour Passage expansion that includes some raised concrete seating and features. There also seems to be a lot of pieces moving about at the southern end of the site closer to the first building location, so fingers crossed this is a good sign.

The cynic in me wonders if the developer "starting construction" this fall will end up consisting of a handful of guys driving a few pilings before calling it quits for the winter.

God I hope not but in all the years I’ve lived here, until there are “shovels in the ground” I don’t believe anything. Even then!

Steepleview had shovels in the ground lol. Supposed to start this month, now it’s “this fall”.
