Not sure if this is news, the building permit was submitted back in December.

Thank goodness the money they’ve raised over the last decade will buy just as many goods and services today with our low/practically-free interest rates, low inflation, solid macro-economic environment, and our surplus of skilled trades and competent sub-contractors.

What worries me is what is going to happen to the current Rattenbury building on Georgia Street the houses the VAG. This being Vancouver, they might just demolish for a giant McDonald's.
Oh, am I being facetious? Not so long ago there was a serious plan to demolish Christ Church Cathedral and replace it with a "crystal" palace designed by Arthur Erickson. It nearly went ahead.

Sorry to break the news to you but 1971/52 years ago is a long time ago.

Any idea of the harebrained scheme to remove one level of the QE Theatre parking was approved along with this? That lot is always full when there's something on there.

That was 54 years ago, and it was the church membership that wanted to get rid of the Christ Church building. There's no suggestion that the Province (who own the old Courthouse) want to replace the building. The question will be what financially viable new use might be proposed. Officedweller has consistently reminded us that one possibility is returning the building to court use.

The cathedral building was in poor condition at the time, needed expensive seismic alterations, and the congregation came up with the idea of redeveloping with a brand new church underneath a commercial tower to pay for it, designed by the City's star architect of the day.

The public outcry at the possible demolition led the City to create the potential to transfer the development potential under zoning from the church site to the adjacent site. Park Place (666 Burard) was allowed to be much bigger than its site was zoned for, and the money from selling the air rights of the cathedral site allowed the congregation to keep the building standing, and updated.

In 1971 that mechanism didn't exist, so the congregation didn't have many options.

I'm glad it's still there, spectacular stained glass inside and a massive organ that sends chills up your spine.
I remember back in the 70's the Nuns used to hand out free sandwiches and there was a long line up of people there.

The church still provides food to people who need it. (Although scaled back by covid). The City supported the program in 2017, the year after the kitchen was expanded at the same time that the bell tower was added, the roof was replaced, and more seismic updates took place.

Excuse me, yes, that was a long time ago. But it seems to epitomize Vancouver's indifference to heritage buildings. The Birks Building was even longer ago, but the site is still occupied nowadays by a suburban-looking piece of architectural junk. Hopefully that mentality has changed, and what goes into the current VAG building will be upscale, that is, attractive to people and an enhancement to the city.

With the new PNE Ampitheatre and VAG opening within a few years of one another, this could be one of the greatest periods of cultural evolution in Vancouver's history. Love it.

Beavis and Butthead LIKE this post. (huh huh... huh huh)

The amphitheatre is going to ne super cool. Now we need Burnaby to build an MLS stadium at Swangard (with help from the Whitecaps) to complete the hattrick.

Vancouver Art Gallery hits 85 per cent of $400m fundraising target for new site

Quote:
Shovels will be on the ground this fall for site remediation with construction slated to begin early in 2024, said Vancouver Art Gallery CEO Anthony Kiendl.
Quote:
The building of the new gallery, slated to open to the public in 2028, is “probably the most ambitious cultural capital project in the country right now.”
Quote:
On Friday, the art gallery announced it has received a $5-million donation from the Djavad Mowafaghian Foundation.

It plans to launch a campaign to raise the remaining $55 million from grassroots donors.

New renders released with yesterday's announcement. The design has changed a bit, particularly at the top, and it looks like it has lost some height.

Think of it this way: they could've stuck to the original design.
