It's about time! The stadium's only been open (fully) going on 9 years now.

Southern Ontario has the semi pro Intercounty Baseball League. Number of the teams are over 100 years old.

I'm not sure a professional league with teams across Canada would fly. However, a champions/ memorial cup for a national champion would be cool for the winners of these semi pro leagues. (If there isn't one already)

There was this short lived experiment I remember from 20 years ago. Some big names involved in the CBL, but still couldn't get the people out for it.

Also since we are sharing our local ballparks, this is the oldest of them all, Labatt Park in London. 4 years shy of 150 years of continuous baseball on this site.

Nice! I may have been there as a kid now that I think about it.

An interesting piece of sports history there. I hope the stadium has some form of historical designation. It should not be bulldozed for yet another condo development.

How Metallica rocking Montreal’s Olympic Stadium reignites debate about venue’s relevancy

Metallica is playing two massive shows at the Olympic Stadium this weekend, once again reigniting questions about the venue’s relevance in Montreal, and if the high cost of its repairs would be worth it.

The venue, which is a fixture in Montreal’s skyline, can host up to 56,000 people. Friday and Sunday evening will see tens of thousands of fans descend on the iconic stadium that has been riddled with roof issues for years, and with that, the ongoing debate as to whether taxpayers’ money should go toward its repair.

“The capacity of the site is necessary for a city like Montreal,” Dinu Bumbaru from Heritage Montreal told Global News. “So it’s not like a decoration. It’s very functional for the city, as well as a landmark.”

But that landmark needs over $250 million in repairs. Back in 2017, then-premier Philippe Couillard’s Liberal government approved the budget of that amount for its renovations — a project that was set to be finished by 2022.

But that contract has since been cancelled. Engineers found that not only did the domed roof need major repairs, but the ring around the roof needs to be replaced too, so the cost of the work is expected to balloon.

The venue hasn’t had a main tenant or sports team since the Expos almost 20 years ago. In the last decades it has hosted a wide variety of events, from sporting competitions to concerts to car shows, but the buzz around the stadium has always been about its structural and financial issues.

As per the stadium’s annual report, taxpayers fund it to the tune of almost $20 million a year — in 2022 it cost $19,8 million. The venue brought in $21,3 million in revenue that year, making it marginally profitable.

The retractable roof has experienced numerous rips and leaks since it was built in the 80s. In 1991 support beams snapped and a 55-ton concrete slab fell onto an exterior part of the venue, injuring no one.

The roof has been under constant safety supervision since, and the price tag
of its repair has stalled it from getting done — as well as the question of venue’s relevance in the city.

The city’s NHL and CFL teams call other venues home, so there is no local sports team looking for real estate. Most large concerts play at the Bell Centre, which music experts have long said provides better sound than the Olympic Stadium does.

Economist Moshe Lander told Global News he believes the cost of maintaining it isn’t worth it, considering what it provides.

“You can’t say that Metallica came to town, therefore it’s justified to keep it going for another 250 million dollars, right?” he said. “Knock it down and put in social housing.”

But like Heritage Montreal, others think the iconic venue located in the city’s east end is worth investing in.

American tourist Jerry Ho told Global from outside the stadium on Friday that he remembers getting a snow globe of the venue when he was young, and that now he had come to see the architecture of the place for himself. “I didn’t get to (ever) see it. And now I’m here, I’m going to be inside.”

As for Metallica fans, they told Global News they were thrilled to see the band play the venue.

“I would say Metallica has probably won the Olympics of metal, so how fitting,” said Jacob Dayfox from North Bay, Ontario.

The multi-purpose stadium was constructed under Mayor Jean Drapeau’s tenure in the mid-1970s to host the 1976 Montreal Summer Olympic games. It currently stands as the second biggest venue in the country after Edmonton’s Commonwealth Stadium, which only holds about 300 people more.

The organization managing the Olympic Stadium is set to submit its new repairs project for the Quebec government to review and approve this fall.

The minister responsible for the stadium, Tourism Minister Caroline Proulx, says she is waiting for that step to be complete before she issues any comment.

Three things, first I am glad you bolded the part about profitability, that important.

Second, what is with this lazy 🞵🞵🞵 group of so called "journalists" Is Moshe Lander the only person they can call when discussing a stadium in Canada? This goomer (see Granny - Beverly Hillbillies) thought Halifax would have a 30-40k seat stadium which was patently ridiculous as the downsizing era was already in full swing (save Regina and Winnipeg) Re Olympic Stadium “Knock it down and put in social housing.” There's some brilliant post modern thinking.

And third is the conundrum of the first paragraph of the quoted section. Yes, Montreal needs a large venue to host big events but the main tenants who should be in there need an intimate, stands close to the field, venue of less than 30k not 56k.

In the video I posted earlier in the thread people express a love and admiration for this building. There's a big part of me using my heart that says do the big renovation but if you do what would make it successful for regular use (downsizing) then you lose the capacity for holding big events unless you can come up with some fancy engineering. What you need is a stadium within a stadium.

I just don't see Legault approving $800 to 900 million to renovate the big O as that's what it would cost. Interior renovation would be around $300 million as Rogers centre project is the equivalent to make it soccer and cfl specific stadium. Then the roof and technical ring would likely cost 500 to 600 million. You could basically build a brand new or finely refurbished stade saputo or stade molson for half the cost.

Totally agree, so is the solution to fix the roof and technical ring, keep the stadium for the big events, which would also mean more events because now the stadium can be used in winter and keep paying the $20 some million/year upkeep along with the hundreds of millions or so to fix the roof.

Let's face it, it's not going to be torn down and I can't see them letting it rot without the yearly upkeep. They will eventually have to fix the roof to maintain the status quo.

And that leaves the Als and CFM to come up with their own solution (which both are agreed that each needs a new facility that they can own and run) It is something they can do together in one new facility.

No point in doing anything major to Molson, the Als don't own or control it and I think they would have very little ability to do anything major. Much easier and more cost effective to build new.

My gut feeling is in the next 5 years the Alouettes will partner up with CF Montreal to do a major renovation of Stade Saputo so it can have more suites and service both cfl and soccer. I can see Peledeau and Saputo splitting the cost 50 50 for say maybe a $200 million renovation. I think Legault likely leaves the big o alone or throws just some crumbs at it to keep it still operational and not condemned so it can host concerts boat shows and moto cross.

Only other option is make the big o an open air stadium again and forget the roof and just do interior renovations for soccer and cfl.

I went there for the first time last year, it was a lot of fun. There is a nice view of the London skyline from Labatt Park as well which makes for an interesting backdrop.

Canada loves baseballs stadiums by a river, next to a bridge.

The Parc Olympique just had its busiest weekend in the history of the complex with Metallica plus a Pride festival plus other stuff too.

More people went through there than even during the busiest weekends in 1976.

I think in London's case, the stadium came before the bridge. Although just up the river to the right of the image is the Blackfriars Bridge with does pre-date the ballpark by a couple years (and is itself the oldest wrought iron bridge in North America that still carries vehicular traffic)

And they achieved that without a roof.

Wow, London went all out trying to become the real London. The name of the City, River and at least one bridge.

That is a nice bridge. Quite a modern shape and silhouette for such an old bridge.

I think there is a roof now, it just needs to be replaced.

Oh there is most definitely a roof on the stadium right now.
