In general those exist elsewhere, but yes that’s probably the only one spot on the 17 with that: 6% downhill on the west approach, 3% downgrade on the bridge itself (eastbound), a sharp curve on the east approach*, followed by 7% uphill.
As I’ve said, it’s an engineering marvel.

* (As some of you may already know,) These exist elsewhere on the 17 too, like at the bottom of the hill by Old Woman Bay (5% grade), and the notorious Montreal Harbour curve at the bottom of a 7% grade.

Every time Manitoba builds an interchange, an angel gets its wings.

Jokes aside, the improvements to the Perimeter and Highway 1 are probably the best bang-for-buck infrastructure improvements we can get today.

A shame the feds just aren't up for a larger 2020s-style Trans-Canada improvement program for the Prairies. I'd even settle just for a few dozen interchanges along the route as a start.

At least they appear to be leaving a large ROW for future expansion to the east & west roadways.

I love the size of roads and interchanges out west. Looks like you could put 8 lanes in each direction under that thing!

With the tolls removed on the 412 and 418, it is annoying (but still better than nothing) that these routes do not go north of the 407.

Traveling to Port Perry last week, I had to exit at Highway 7 and travel through Brooklyn to get to Highway 12. I could have taken the 412 to the 407 and then take that to the 12, but that would involve a entrance fee, camera charge, and toll to access just one interchange on the road. Not really worth it IMO.

Also the 401 should really be 4 or 5 lanes each way west of the 412. Now that it's toll free a lot of traffic is dumped on 3 lanes before widening to 5 a couple km to the west. That should really be extended ASAP and have been included in the original 401/412 interchange project.

(Great photo BTW)

Whitby is working on a Brooklyn bypass route, but it will be a municipal road and will connect to Lakeridge, not the 412.

https://connectwhitby.ca/highway-712-EA

MTO should be looking at building a Highway 12 bypass connecting from the Highway 7 off ramps from the 412, IMO. It doesn't need to be a 400-series extension, and could probably even just be a 2-lane rural MTO highway.

I would see it starting with 2 roundabouts on Highway 7 at the off ramps, run north from the 412-off ramp roundabout, use the Coronation Road overpass over the 407, then run northeast through fields to connect to 12 around Myrtle. Probably wouldn't be wildly expensive and would fix the transportation issues in the area.

Yea it was a bummer that 412 northward extension wasn’t considered when 407 East was built. Retrofitting that interchange would be messy though probably still doable, definitely easier than trying to extend 416 across Lac Deschênes to Aylmer onto the A-550 corridor.

412 extension should be planned to connect to Highway 11.

What is this???
All these years, I thought it was a diamond interchange until I looked more closely today.

Indeed, I knew you (@sonysnob) were at Whiteshell (Hawk Lake), but I didn’t know you went that far~

Ps: Someone once asked, “Is Whiteshell pronounced like ‘white-shell’ or ‘whites-hell’?”
