That's good news! I do find it odd that, given this is an interprovincial bridge, the guest on the mayor's video wasn't the mayor of Gatineau, but I guess this was an impromptu video, and that will be reserved for the official opening.

Executive Director of Run Ottawa. Considering Sutcliffe is an avid runner, the guy is probably a long time friend. Seems plausible he didn't even call the Mayor of Gatineau to invite her for a quick video. It seems equally possible she was invited, but didn't care.

Could be a while for that one, but it sounds like the Woodroffe High School Ped Bridge between Lincoln Fields and Iris has also opened today. Two bridge openings in one day ain't bad, though both are a year or so later than anticipated.

Chief William Commanda Bridge to open for use Friday

Staff Reporter, Ottawa Citizen
Published Aug 04, 2023 • Last updated 35 minutes ago • 1 minute read

The long-awaited Chief William Commanda Bridge linking Ottawa to Gatineau will open for use Friday, Mayor Mark Sutcliffe announced on social media.

“I know people are really interested in this … so enjoy the Chief William Commanda Bridge,” said the mayor, who was in running clothes and flanked by Ian Fraser, executive director of Run Ottawa.

Fraser called the new recreational bridge “super-exciting.”

“And then we’ll have the official opening in September.”

This newspaper published a story Wednesday saying city officials say the much-anticipated opening of the Bridge has been delayed by work on its railings and other safety features.

In the meantime, impatient cyclists have been vaulting barriers at the bridge to try out the refurbished bridge and its multi-use pathway.

“Smooth ride and great views,” said one cyclist who posted his crossing to X (the new name for Twitter).

Carina Duclos, the City of Ottawa’s director of infrastructure services, said city staff are working closely with contractors to ensure the bridge meets all applicable safety standards.

“Work on the railings, and other safety measures, are taking longer to finalize than initially expected,” said Duclos.

Sutcliffe did not address the fence-hopping or the delays in opening the structure.

The multi-use pathway was originally scheduled to be operational in the spring of this year.

The rail bridge has since been refurbished in a $22.6-million project financed by the city with the help of $8.6 million from the federal government.

Previously known as the Prince of Wales Bridge, it was formally renamed last year for legendary Algonquin Chief Commanda.

Commanda, who died in August 2011 at the age of 97, spent decades building bridges between Indigenous peoples and the larger Canadian population. He called for forgiveness and reconciliation despite facing hardship and racism in his own life.

Chief William Commanda Bridge now open

Published on
August 4, 2023

Parking, roads, traffic and transitPlanning, development and constructionRecreation and parks
We’ve got some exciting news, Ottawa! The Chief William Commanda Bridge is now open for residents and visitors to enjoy!

As part of a larger rehabilitation project connecting Ottawa’s Trillium Pathway to the National Capital Commission’s Voyageurs’ pathway in Gatineau, this multi-use pathway is now open to cycling commuters, recreational users and visitors.

Although there is still ongoing work on the pier and the substructure, our dedicated team of engineers has given their approval to open the multi-use pathway. While using the bridge, please be mindful of the construction areas, and kindly follow all signs to ensure your safety.

As we progress with the complete rehabilitation project, we anticipate some temporary disruptions to bridge access over the next year. The City of Ottawa will communicate these disruptions in advance to ensure the impact to users is known ahead of time.

The restoration of the Chief William Commanda Bridge marks a significant milestone as a major interprovincial link, facilitating active transportation across our region.

Before setting out on your journey, make sure you have updated information about the pathway and visit the City’s interactive traffic map(link is external) to confirm the pathway is open for use.

Additionally, keep an eye out for the official bridge opening ceremony, scheduled to take place in the fall.

For more information on City programs and services, visit ottawa.ca, call 3-1-1 (TTY: 613-580-2401) or 613-580-2400 to contact the City using Canada Video Relay Service.

Is the walk via the Chief William Commanda Bridge and the Zibi development worth it or are portions of this loop unpleasant?

Just did this loop it was really pleasant. Just lots of cyclists and people checking out the bridge and the construction on Chaudiere bridge isn’t that nice to look at.

They look like the same type of metal straps they use to attach signs to lamp posts and such.

Edit: likely something similar to this. https://www.seton.ca/accessory-band-...are-99991.html

Really don't understand how this is 23 million dollars worth of work.

I suspect that much of that money went to engineering studies and structural remediation to take it from being a derelict bridge that hasn't been maintained for the past 20 years and make it structurally safe. Having the bridge collapse when loaded with pedestrians and cyclists it wouldn't be a good look for the city.

New bridge is great, users say — but Gatineau side's layout is not
Only one end of intersection of bridge exit and pathway has raised stop sign

Guy Quenneville · CBC News · Posted: Aug 08, 2023 4:00 AM EDT | Last Updated: 2 hours ago

The newly-opened Chief William Commanda Bridge connecting Ottawa and Gatineau, Que., was packed with first-time visitors this long weekend, with several ooh-ing and ah-ing at the pedestrianized former Ottawa River rail crossing.

"Nice and wide," said Ottawa resident Mike Johansen. "Very calming."

"Neat to see a different perspective that we've never seen before," Johansen's riding companion Andrea Ryan added.

Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe, an avid runner, gave his own review Saturday, one day after he announced the crossing's eagerly-anticipated opening.

"Spectacular views of the river and downtown," he wrote on social media.

But some users have concerns about the T-junction at the Voyageurs Pathway that awaits cyclists, runners and pedestrians who exit the bridge on the Gatineau side.

"It's a little bit of a recipe for disaster," said cyclist Michèle Ménard-Foster.

While there's a stop sign on a pole facing users exiting the bridge, there isn't one for people headed east or west on the Voyageurs Pathway.

That's resulting in congestion that poses a safety risk, she said.

"People coming across their first time, they're not sure where they're going, so they have to make some quick decisions," Ménard-Foster said.

"It would be ideal if it was a three-way stop with lots more signage, especially for cyclists to be patient and give pedestrians priority, which is often something that I see on bike paths."

Gatineau cyclist Pierre Duguay called the new bridge "fantastic" Sunday morning, but echoed Ménard-Foster's concerns about the intersection.

"There's too [many] people so [it] could be dangerous. But they will fix it," Duguay said, noting that traffic will likely calm down once the fervour over the new bridge fades.

There are painted red stop signs on the pathway's surface, but they're chipped and faded. Riders rolled through both them and the bridge's stop sign on Sunday.

Some bridge users also pooled by the exit or in the middle of the pathway, adding to the congestion.

Both the City of Ottawa, which built the bridge, and the National Capital Commission, which oversees the Voyageurs Pathway, said they may not be in a positon to respond until Tuesday.

"Maybe [install] real stop signs," suggested Ryan, when asked what improvements could be made. "[People] might not stop, but at least they'll slow down, have a look, maybe."

Ménard-Foster said she witnessed "many, many" near-collisions.

"It's very narrow here too on the Gatineau bike path, so not much room to react and move aside," she said.

Once she got off the bridge, Ménard-Foster crossed over to the opposite side of the pathway — a dead end filled with crushed rock, but a refuge for cyclists trying to figure out where to head next.

"Thank goodness this is here," she said. "Because otherwise it would be a bit of a chaotic situation."
