I've seen front yards turned into temporary parking lot in Buffalo. It's ugly as sin. Mind you it's only a couple of days a year. I haven't seen these areas without cars. I imagine people will put less effort in their front yards just to capitalize on those few days a year.

There's also the matter of people capitalizing on property they may not technically own. In Toronto, the majority of a home's front lawn is public lands.

Ottawa By-law never tolerates anything. They have a field day any time we have a major event. Shouldn't say they never tolerate everything. They tolerated the Freedom Convoy in winter 2022. Only people who still received tickets were locals.
Ottawa special (or bylaw officer's nightmare): Lansdowne parking and free glass of lemonade made by little kids!

A lot of people seem to embrace it in Hamilton. Up until this season I've always parked on the street (I'm now living within a few blocks of the stadium) but when you walk there it seems more and more households are having their own gameday parties on porches. Some of them look like they're pretty rowdy too.

There are plenty of quiet houses as well, though. But it's only 10 or 11 times a year so unless one is a — grump, I'd think those who would prefer more peace have the patience to accept it.

When IG Field was built a decade ago, a lot of surrounding residential areas became no-parking zones on gamedays. I thought that would kind of fritter away over time, but it is still being enforced. Now I wonder if any of the residents in those areas are renting out parking space in their driveways for football games...

That said, access to IG Field has eased significantly over the years with a full BRT line being built to service it, along with improved bike access including a bike valet. From what I can tell, the number of people cycling to IG Field has to be into the low thousands each game. It's a pretty substantial number.

I remember as a kid the area around the annual Western Fair in London that started the Friday after the CNE closed turned into a "front lawn parking zoo" for the 10 days of the fair. If there was a piece of grass big enough to hold those big 70's cars, someone would park on it for a few bucks. Back in those days, the fair was a big deal but over the years, attendance dropped, transit got better, and some of the industrial areas were demolished and more parking opened up. Nowadays, the fair isn't even in the same spot and there is no shortage of parking and no more yard parking.

In cooperation with the Minister of Transportation and Economic Corridors, who is the lead, and the Minister of Municipal Affairs, contributing up to $330 million towards road and bridge construction, LRT connection, site utilities, site reclamation and other supportive infrastructure to support the Calgary arena and entertainment district project. This funding includes up to $30 million for a new 1,000-seat community arena neighbouring the main arena that will serve youth and amateur hockey.

I wonder how often the community will have access to the "community arena" after the Flames, Heat and hitman get their fill?

Given the different demand profiles, the CSEC users will probably use very underused times, weekday daytimes.

We advocated for the community rink in Edmonton and it works well.

There is free skating, free rentals, learn to skate for newcomers, hockey tournaments, mens league and the Oil Kings use it as well.

No longer the Heat - they are the Wranglers.

The Jays have released renderings for the new 100 level renovation to the dome coming this winter. Foul territory will be reduced by about 3000 sq ft. and there will be more legroom and bigger seats.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/big-o-roof-replacement-contract-olympic-stadium-1.6919712

Plans to replace the Big O's roof just got more complicated, and likely more expensive

Plan now is to replace roof and technical ring that holds it together

Nearly six years after plans to replace the roof of the iconic Olympic Stadium were announced, those plans are changing drastically and, as a result, the cost of the work is expected to balloon.

In 2017, the Quebec government under former premier Philippe Couillard approved a $250-million budget for a new roof. It was supposed to be installed by the end of 2022 but that timeline has since been pushed back several times and there's been no real end in sight to the Big O roof saga.

On Wednesday, things got even more complicated.

The provincial agency that manages the Olympic Park announced that it cancelled the call for tenders for the initial roof replacement job. Instead, it will pursue a deal with the Groupe Pomerleau-Canam (GPC), a consortium that includes Quebec companies.

That consortium would then be in charge of replacing the roof — and the technical ring, which is the immense concrete, oval-shaped structure that holds the roof in place. It has a perimeter of about 470 metres and a diameter that varies between 104 and 175 metres, depending on where you measure it.

In a statement, the Société de développement et de mise en valeur du Parc olympique said expert analysis showed that replacing the technical ring was necessary in order to conform to the latest federal building code.

It also described this latest change to the project as "radically different" from what was initially approved by the province.

The agency now expects to submit a new proposal, with a new price tag, to the Quebec government this fall.

replacing the technical ring is going to be a massive job if they go ahead with it I would think will be a similar roof and reno job to BC place and would likely be the new home for the Alouettes and CF Montreal with the upper deck usually curtained off and have the lower bowl squared off for soccer and football so it no longer is on a track for baseball.

If they're going to dump all that money into the place they may as well use it.

With a BC Place-type approach of a curtained off balcony, they can probably make it a little homey and inviting. And probably a decent step up from Molson and Saputo Stadiums.

Would give the facility a purpose and can host grey cups again which would help the Alouettes. Will see if Legault agrees to this?

Time to throw in the towel and tear down the Big-O.
No need for a stadium that large anyway.

You can't tear it down, you've got a bunch of people and a company ensconced in the tower.

The Nightmare Continues
Philippe Teisceira-Lessard La Presse July 27, 2023

A huge pipe

The technical ring of the Olympic Stadium is a gigantic concrete tube over 450 meters long, located at the top of the structure.

"It's so big that you can walk around without any problem," explained France Vanlaethem, architect and professor emeritus at UQAM's School of Design, in a telephone interview. She recently wrote a long analysis on the heritage value of the built legacy of the 1976 Games.

With a fixed roof made of steel, "the balance of the building changes," which may have forced the engineers to lighten the upper part of the building, she said. " It's linked. [The technical ring] is the break between the structure and the roof. »

"It's not only structurally important, but also functionally important," especially because stage technicians use it to set up equipment, she continued. “It is an essential element in the design of the building.

Claude Phaneuf, one of the engineers who worked on the structure of the Olympic Stadium, described the technical ring as one of the elements making the building “a feat of the 20th century ”
