Can't tell from landmarks - is this for the small meetinghouse site or the big residential tower?

Looks like perhaps both. This shoring appears to be on the eastern end of the site, where the residential tower will be built:

You are looking at 16th street near the onramp to I-676 west.

And to put that in perspective regarding the future tower's location:

I can't believe this is starting! It's probably my favorite project taking place in the city right now, namely because it's going to dilute both the expressway and its onramp.

The Mormons don't mess around. Gotta love the ambition and ability to get this done. Their projects are class A and I would like to see them continue to see Philly as a positive place to do business, because they are smart business people.

Someday the top floors of this thing will have excellent views of City Hall, Logan Square, Penn Center, and the W and SLS looking down Broad almost simultaneously.

I walked by this site the other day. A real nice hole in the ground with construction moving alone nicely. It's my wish that one day, the city will reconfigure that awful on-ramp to 676. Densely populated areas almost always use the parallel service road highway entrance design (e.g., eastbound 676 entrance at Broad and Vine). Why the designers decided to use an entire city block to create a suburban style clover highway entrance is a complete mystery to me (any historians here know the story?). Philly Fan's image really shows what a complete waste of space that design is. I'm still surprised to see that townhomes will be facing this space but god bless em because the street look 10x better when the tower is complete.

Do they have a sample of a finished wall on the site? I'm really curious what kind of materials will be used.

This was one of the worst parking lots in or around downtown. Good riddance.

Definitely a rare example of old-world craftsmanship in the 21st Century.

Since this project is going to have sub grade parking its probably going to take quite a bit longer than some of the other new residential stuff that has gone up or is under construction where all parking is above street level. Id think they are going to be under ground for the rest of the summer at this site.

You have to be tall--and cool--to get shots as awesome as those.

" CONGRATULATIONS, PHILLY! " I salute Philadelphia developers for their, tasteful, variety of new towers that reflect an array of retro and contemporary styles. I've said before and I'll say it again, IMO, there's a tiresome proliferation of blue-glass highrises dominating most big North American cities. That was a nice change from post-modernism, for a while. But, too many developers and planners have overdone it.

In some large cities, whose names I won't mention to avoid starting a war of words, blue-glass towers go on for blocks and bear no relation to their civic locales. Most of those new towers are too close in proximity to each other and bear little distinction from other neighboring ones. But, a classic-inspired tower like 1601 Vine is a nice distinct reminder that some architects and developers still value a ' sense of place ' .
