Detroit City Fieldhouse opens after renovations

The former City Sports Center is now home to the Detroit City Fieldhouse, complete with new fields and a club house. Leagues started earlier this month, and a grand opening is scheduled for October 27.

Detroit City FC and the city held a ribbon cutting on Monday, and talked about how the group’s $40,000 Motor City Match grant award helped them fully open sooner than expected. Todd Kropp, co-owner of the Fieldhouse, said that initially they thought it would take several phases to get the work completed, but the $40,000 grant helped to solidify the project and get the Fieldhouse fully open on time.

Work is finishing up on the Detroit City Club House upstairs between the two fields. A bar and restaurant will soon open here—it will be open to the public, not just for those using the field. A small club shop is also located behind the bar.

Bucharest Grill’s Biggest Ever Location Opens Downtown Tonight [Updated]

At 130 seats, the downtown location of Bucharest will be the casual Detroit-based chain’s largest restaurant to date. Tarasov, who owns the Columbia Street building, is also introducing something new but entirely fitting for Bucharest — a bar. The location will feature approximately 21 different beers pouring from 24 taps. The beer menu is comprised of selections from local and regional breweries including Batch Brewing Company, Bell’s, Brew Detroit, and Atwater, as well as domestics like Budweiser and Miller.

Corktown’s Detroit Barbers Opens Coffee Bar on Upper Level

Owners of Detroit Barbers Barbershop and Brand, Chad and Jamie Buchanan, have expanded their Corktown location to include an independent coffee bar, Lucky Detroit, on the shop’s second level.

Now open, Lucky Detroit offers custom beverages including espressos, lattes, pour-overs, mochas, chai, and specialty offerings made with handcrafted syrups and local ingredients.

Logistics company mulls Detroit operations with 300 employees near Corktown

A growing Chicago-based third-party logistics company may open a new facility in Detroit employing up to 300 people.

Coyote Logistics LLC is considering whether it will spend $3.6 million to create the new facility at 1700 W. Fort St. in a mixed-use building near the Corktown neighborhood owned by Dan Gilbert, the billionaire mortgage and real estate mogul, according to Otie McKinley, media and communications manager for the Michigan Economic Development Corp.

The Michigan Strategic Fund board on Tuesday approved a $1.5 million Michigan Business Development Program grant for the possible project. The company, founded in 2006, is also considering locating the facility in Denver; if it chooses that city instead of Detroit, the grant would not be awarded.

Designed by inFORM Studio and built by Sachse Construction, the $1.1 million addition beautifully highlights how to add on to historic architecture. Todd Sachse told Curbed that the 2,500-square-foot addition shows how to blend function and form; inside, the space is open and concrete—an ideal workspace for the makers. Outside is all about form; gaps in white bricks bring in light, while iridescent tiles show off the historic pottery.

Sahara Restaurant & Grill to open first Detroit location in The District Detroit

Olympia Development of Michigan joins the award-winning Sahara Restaurant & Grill to announce that the local favorite will bring its unique Mediterranean and Middle Eastern flavors The District Detroit by opening its first location in the city next year. The 4,500-square-foot space will be in the retail space now under construction at the Little Caesars world headquarters campus expansion on Columbia Street.

Antietam's Gratiot Avenue space resurrected as seafood, burger restaurant

Le Culture Cafe is leasing from Greg Holm, owner of the Detroit buildings and restaurant Antietam, Holm confirmed to Crain's. He said in a message he is still looking to sell his property on Gratiot, but did not respond to a question on price.

The incoming restaurant's owner, Drew Matthews, said he's aiming for a Nov. 9 opening. He deferred additional comment to a chef who wasn't immediately available.

Le Culture is taking up around 2,000 square feet across the ground floor of both storefronts.

He said he has had his eye on downtown Detroit for the past 20-25 years and, now that it's on the come-up, he's ready to buy in.

"We are looking downtown and waiting for the right situation," he said, citing proximity and similarities between Detroit and Cleveland as reasons why he thinks the move would be successful.

Saccone said he has "not found the right site so far" and the timeline for opening a Detroit location depends on "what we find" in terms of real estate.

Alumnus of Detroit’s WSU Donates $5M to College of Engineering

The 8,000-square-foot N. Rachmale Foundation Structures and Materials Laboratory is expected to be completed in 2020 and will provide civil engineering students and faculty opportunities to engage in large-scale, real-world structures and materials testing projects.

Structures and materials testing is essential to verify and understand the behavior of key infrastructure components such as bridges, roads, and buildings.

Because WSU’s on-campus civil engineering testing facilities have restricted access to the large trucks needed to transport products like steel and concrete bridge girders, bridge decks, pipes, and steel and fiber-reinforced polymer rebar, the College of Engineering has been unable to pursue projects involving key civil structural components.

YumVillage to join Baobab Fare on the same block in Detroit's New Center

When it opens in early 2019, YumVillage will function as a fast-casual restaurant with walk-up counter service. The new kitchen will allow him to expand on his popular food truck items to include soups and salads. The addition of fryers means diners can expect Afro-Caribbean takes on fried chicken and seafood, too.

Ihentuge said he plans to add a beer and wine component with both also offered to-go but is still finalizing a deal on a liquor license.

He also sees food delivery as a major component of the business.

Marijuana dispensary to expand into southwest Detroit

The Reef, short for reefer, is a procurement center at 6640 Eight Mile, one of many along that road. The company is expanding to historic 174 S. Clark, a 1906 building that has housed offices for the Detroit Copper and Brass Rolling Mills Co., the port authority and the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.

The company signed an indefinite lease in August and is investing more than $3 million into the three-floor, approximately 24,000-square-foot building to house a speakeasy-inspired dispensary. It also would provide space for the company to expand into processing and cultivating marijuana, subject to state licensing approval.

"The profit margins are way higher when we grow it ourselves," Hasan said.

He said the new location, yet to be named, would employ about 80 people and be inspired by the 1920s. The Reef plans to use the old safes in the building to store product and have a VIP room for limited products. It also hopes to make the door that separates the dispensary's lobby from the "budroom," where customers select and purchase their cannabis, a revolving bookshelf.

^Though a controversial use of the building, I'd rather see a renovated and fully used building than an underutilized or entirely unused building in any part of the city.

Does anyone have any update on the groundbreaking for the Monroe Blocks, I have seen and heard they are closing the parking lot in the beginning of November, I have see they are starting the extension of one campus martius

The project, announced last year, includes replacement or repair of mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems; and safety, elevator and restroom improvements. The GSA said it is expected to “help prevent costly emergency repairs in the future, resulting in significant savings for American taxpayers and a safer and more efficient federal space for building tenants and visitors.”
