The RBC facade restoration seems like it's finished with all the scaffolding coming down on the West Hastings side.

We'll see - I hope so - the Owners are notorious feet draggers

Perhaps they were just waiting for the right opportunity to have a more progressive City Council to get this approved?

VAHA Burrard - Mass Timber Tower

Let the 'Mass Timber Race' begin...https://skyscraperpage.com/forum/showthread.php?p=10012201#post10012201

Looks like VAHA Burrard has stumbled out of the gate.
The site has been quiet for the pass 2 weeks (no workers on site), except for a couple of days last weeks when I noticed traffic in front of my building on Drake and for a time, up to the bridge, one north lane of Burrard was blocked for site dirt removal.
It must be chaos at that intersection (Burrard and Davie) when dump trucks are lined up for dirt removal.

No they were not.

I will add that this proposal in its various forms has been in the works, actively for years. Was previously proposed under the old Council non-compliant policy who were receptive and it then got shuffled into the Granville Street Interim Rezoning Policy

The current council is all the pro-development voters from the old council plus Ken Sim and four yes-men. If Ken's as urbanist as he claims to be, a 9-2 Yes vote is as receptive as City Hall gets.

It probably won't be Council that prevents this from happening. The developer has quite a bit of very underdeveloped property Downtown, and has pursued several projects (including one on this site) and then not followed through in building them. I think there are maybe two modest buildings completed in 30 years.

Another West End Plan laneway2.0 conversion of surface parking to rental proposal. This is at 1501 Haro, and adds 60 more rental units. More details on Shape Your City or the Changing City blog.

Thanks for the reminder. The distance between the buildings certainly looks narrower than the DP application (identical) further west down Haro.

I'm definitely sending in comments for "enhanced landscaping treatment" between the old and new buildings. When we did some Laneway 2.0 stuff we got some really cool news and courtyard designs.

Nice! While I appreciate the easy parking in this nearby lot whenever I have a rental car to park overnight or family/friends come to visit, the lot is severely underutilized and 60 rental units will be a big improvement.

How do you know for certain? The man in the orange vest told you so?

As far as I can remember, the previous proposal was for something much shorter. Over time, it became taller, much taller. Obviously they are following the sentiments of City Hall, as well as taller-building advocates.

You say it as if it is not an issue to propose developments, when in reality every time a completely new building is proposed, possibly hundreds of thousands of dollars go into an application process, including the many hours of work by consultants and others to ensure such a building can even be built on the said site. Obviously, like many other developers, this one did not see the opportunity ripe to build here despite initially proposing a short rental building a few years ago. These are not well-known property owners/developers and likely not have deep pockets like some of the more prominent ones, such as CF. Who knows, perhaps this particular hotel proposal is their big breakthrough. At least someone is proposing something nice (and tall) here.

I am, however, still pleasantly surprised that a nice hotel is proposed here, especially since across the street is the very rundown former Howard Johnson hotel purchased by the province and turning into a slum. So many businesses left the area after.

This is not the case either.

Yes.

EDIT: It was a red vest.

Edit x2: I'm on your side here for a building that wildly does not comply with the existing area plan / guidelines. Just, hold your horses on the speculation.

Only two levels of parking so I guess it won't take that long.

City of Vancouver is asking for feedback on how to make Gastown’s unique streets, laneways and public spaces more vibrant and people-friendly:

#1 Water street pedestrian only.

#2 Remove dumpsters from alleyways.

#3 repair / rebuild the cobblestone streets. No cheaping out and using asphalt.

#4 Crack down on open drug use.

Don’t need a degree to figure these out.

Since all these are obvious and sensible ideas, I’m sure none of them will be considered.
