Why can’t YHU have international flights, or at least transborder, again?

I would love a YHM connection to it, hopefully that can happen.

Discover’s YYC-FRA route this winter is being reduced as of 19DEC25 from daily to 6x weekly and then 5x weekly for most of Jan-Mar: https://www.aeroroutes.com/eng/250827-4ynw25na

Wonder what airfield improvements they might do at YHU with that new terminal. Looks like only 1 runway there for commercial use and it's a long way from the new terminal, especially assuming most landings will be on 24R instead of 06L. Looks like some awkward taxi routes to the terminal and some crossing of the main runway, which I don't think is really ideal either, as well as using the entire length of the general aviation runway as a taxi route from or to the western end of the main runway.

WS officially has more 787s on the way. This morning they announced a massive order with Boeing that includes 7 more 789s with an option of 4 more.

Decision made sense at the time.

Curious on the timeline of these though. Guessing they won't get any for next summer but maybe in time for 2027?

Has Boeing managed to speed up deliveries that much?

Could honestly see YYC-LGW first. Would be tough having one Dreamliner in Edmonton. Unless they flew more than one 789 route through LGW it would be hard rotating the frame unless they went YEG-YYC

YYC's terminal is pretty full in the Europe departure time during the summer. I can see them adding more east Asia from YYC, such as MNL. Otherwise these planes would provide widebody service from elsewhere in the country, like YYZ, YEG, YVR.

YYC’s altitude will negatively impact the chances of seeing non stop MNL.

ATH, more Italy, Spain, and more London (LGW) will be a given in Europe. YYC-PEK is probably doable (assuming Russian overflights are possible in 5+ years). Anything deeper in Asia will most likely be flown from YVR. Same for Australia.

Anyway, WS needs to get these frames first, and that’s not happening anytime soon.

Does this factor in Russian airspace restrictions? They'd have to fly around Korea adding a good 2-3 hours of flying time. I'd say PVG is more likely.

Yeah that'll be a long time in Westjet years. They seem to change their minds very often.

Would flights deeper into China need to be from Vancouver though? Say Hong Kong for example, it's only around 14hrs from Vancouver. Same with MNL. It should be doable from YYC with a 789 no, even with the altitude no?

It's to do with Calgary's altitude. Calgary to Manila or Hong Kong is doable, but not ideal. They would need to have a lighter load and exclude mixed cargo at least. Ideally, WS would probably have to go with the newer 777s or A350's to get the range to those further out destinations. Unless WS is looking to do some Asian routes from YVR. YVR is already well serviced to Asia, but who knows.

I foresee PVG/KIX from YYC, and that's about it. The rest will probably be Euro focused, with YYZ-LGW added back and possibly BCN/CDG, and LGW added back from either YYC or YVR/YEG.

Or depending on the situation with Russia, maybe PEK. More Europe make sense, but where in Europe though? From YYC there is already Rome, Barcelona, Paris, London, Edinburgh, Dublin, Zurich, Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Munich. Athens or Lisbon?
