For f*** sakes. I was excited to see new roller coasters and other ride attractions.

Guess it is too good to be true?

Not sure why you guys didn't post or link to PNE's actual statement, but here it is..

The short of it is that this is just a concept plan. The only 'Disneyland style theme park' aspect of it is the different areas.

I remember reading the old report and a large parkade was envisioned for the north west corner of the park.

Also, Playland will expand and add new attractions for its phase 2 developmental plan, but the PNE does not want to live up to uninformed claims that it would be Disneyland like. It's all a concept for now. Hopefully we do get a couple more roller coasters because the site already has enough rides that include swinging you around like a ragdoll.

Seems like splitting hairs to me.
.. or someone at the PNE is very, very anti-corporate and despises "Disney".

Alternatively, somebody thought "Disneyland, but nowhere as good" was a bad idea. They're expanding Playland - which is a good thing - but theme-ing various areas seems like a dumb idea when they currently don't have the space or the budget for anything like the scale of Six Flags or Universal; right now, the entire park could fit comfortably into Tomorrowland.

By splitting hairs, I mean that they must think people are reading too much into a "Disney" comparison.
I don't think the public is that pedantic / precise.

I think joe public would think - Great! they'll make it look pretty, not just a bunch of rides planted on asphalt.
I would think that a "Disney" reference would support their case, even if the final product isn't to a Disney standard.

I love their reaction to being compared to "Disney."

Officedweller said it perfectly, to most saying "Disney like" is a very positive sales tactic and simply means that the ride portion of the park will be larger and better than it is today (and honestly, the image shown does look very Universal Studios / Disney like IMO, AKA a modernly designed theme park with more than a single decent roller coaster).

Only in Vancouver a flattering claim such as being compared to Disney can be twisted as negative publicity by a theme park hoping to under go major renovations...........

I hope they will still have room for all the haunted houses on fright nights (or maybe have room for more?) That is by far their best event.

I'd love it if they could revitalize it. Would be a benefit to Vancouver, that is for sure.

The detailed design engineering for the daylighting of Still creek in Hastings Park was completed in early 2015, but it appears from this response by the PNE that instead of being daylighted now as it was planned to be done, it is being put off to sometime in the future.

I wonder why as the stream is not going anywhere, what has changed?, i wonder if the Disney Theming of playland as something to do with it, causing the PNE to have alternative plans for the space that the daylighting would have occupied.?

"Thanks you for your inquiry on the Hastings Park project. Following the completion and opening of Empire Fields, Plateau Park and the Greenways, there is little else on the immediate horizon. We just completed an infrastructure study of the entire site to determine what services and utilities are around and beneath the property in order to be prepared for future improvements.

The PNE is hoping to build a new amphitheater, potentially improve the Livestock building for markets, community, and cultural events.

One component of these improvements will be the daylighting of the stream, however it is further down the line, potentially as much as 5-10 years away.

Updates will be provided on the website should anything be happening and you are always welcome to email me."

All the new stuff doesn't happen until the last half of the 10 year plan. The first phase is going to fix up the existing site.

Playland Redevelopment (expansion and greening)
• Ph1 = 2017 – 2021 (5yr)
• Ph2 = 2019 – 2027 (8yr with 2 year overlap)
• $120M total over 10 years
• Starting with $1.5 million for further study
and detailed design

PNE planning new covered amphitheatre for outdoor concerts and festivals

Kenneth Chan Apr 30, 2019

Artistic rendering of the potential “best scenario” concept for a new PNE Amphitheatre. (PNE)

Big changes will be coming to the Pacific National Exhibition over the coming years, as identified by Vancouver City Council’s 2010-approved master plan for the future of Hastings Park, which includes a significant expansion of Playland.

One major existing purpose-built event space that is geared for renewal is the aging outdoor amphitheatre, which has in recent years seen growing utilization for concerts both during The Fair and other periods of the year.

This event venue currently has a capacity for up to 7,000 people, including 4,500 in bench-style seating and 2,500 standees on the amphitheatre floor.

Nice!

It was a shame that the Expo Theatre was demolished after Expo 86.

Agreed.

That was a great site for it too (at the time).

Just another narrow-sighted miss by the city.

But hopefully this PNE proposal will provide a much needed outdoor performance venue in the city. Can't wait until the nimbys come out against this though...
