One of my flights - about 10 days ago - was on WestJet. I did notice those YYC terminal instructions in the check-in email.
But...
- My hunch is that most people (me included) don't read those emails.
- To give you a sense of how voluminous the email was, it also included info about Samsung Galaxy Note7, how to check in for the flight, flight details, details about the inflight entertainment system, a section promoting the WestJet app, info on both checked and carry-on baggage -- including dimensional limits and costs, cut off times for check-in and baggage drop, and a paragraph about discounted parking at Park2Go. There's only so much info that people can absorb.
- WestJet is only one airline operating at YYC, and is based and hubbed in Calgary. It's pretty unlikely that Hainan or United or BA are going to customize their equivalent emails to their customers -- given that YYC is a pretty small spoke in each of their systems. I doubt that AC would even do something like this.
- And, as discussed a lot in this thread, what a passenger needs to do in an aiport should be easy and intuitive -- and not dependent upon receiving, reading and following instructions!
If I'm flying from YYC to "XYZ", with a connection in YYZ, and I receive emailed instructions on how to "use" YYZ and what I need to do
to adapt my behaviour to their building design . . . well, (1) I'm not going to read it and (2) it's going to annoy me. Life's busy enough without having to read an instruction manual for an airport!
For what it's worth, here's the section of the WestJet check-in email that I received ... again, just one small part of a very, very loooong email from them:
Note that it doesn't tell people to wait anywhere, or to not try to wait at the gate.
But even with this email:
- Interestingly, my TripCase app started reporting the exact gate number (E75, for this flight) long before I even left home for the airport! (TripCase automatically links up to all of my WestJet flights somehow. So much for call to gate when I know the gate hours in advance!)
- WestJet's email states that gate info will come "75 minutes before" flight time. If that was the case, and if people proceeded to their gate at 1h 15min prior to flight time, that would still leave 120-ish people standing around at an unfurnished gate for about 45 minutes. Or, they'd sit on the floor at the gate for 45 minutes. And they'd spend that time, frustrated and uncomfortable, sending angry tweets to @FlyYYC to complain about sitting on the floor!

There's no question that lots of people are having positive experiences in the new terminal. I have as well.
But YYC can't afford to ignore the frequency and consistency (and the level of anger) of the complaints about Call To Gate. The 'voice of customer' is pretty loud, pretty clear, and amazingly consistent. Hopefully they're listening!
