I lived in Richmond when I first moved from Toronto. Not a fan of the commute downtown. The size of those skytrains can barely accommodate all the daily rush hour commuters. However, I was say that Richmond has the best variety and quality food choices.

The sort of retail that moved into Gastown in the early 2000s and made it worth visiting has been moving into Chinatown.

Those historic buildings are by far the first place businesses want to set up. All the new residents moving into the area will re-energize Pender, then things will really pick up when people in the surrounding areas like OV and CityGate start wandering in. I see East Pender and East Hastings becoming just as significant as Granville St. and Robson St., but with an edgier vibe. That's how I see it anyways.

Haha I hope so buddy! The great thing that sold me on this place was the floor plan and low strata. No amenities (which is a con) but "almost guaranteed" to stay low for a while. I've been looking for my first home for 2 years and finally decided on this place. My realtor can finally take a break from showing my properties every other week.

I totally agree. This area does need more landmarks though. Places non locals flock to just for the experience (phnom penh). People have to see first hand that the area is changing. That's when all the new developments and shops start to thrive.

Now Fodera has relocated the little museum to a basement at 432 Homer St. But he insists that within a couple of years it will return to the old shack with an impressive new addition - a 32-foot statue of Hendrix. According to Fodera, a new project from local developer Bonnis & Sons will leave the shack in place and host the statue, too.

I love that Chinatown is getting all this development, but hate that it's all postmodern schlock. Toronto made the same mistake with their beautiful, central St. Lawrence neighborhood in the 90's, everything had to be a pomo midrise. Yup tried going to Fat Mao which is on the ground floor for dinner Sat night and it was closed due to concern the shutters could fall.

I went by The Flats today and took these pics. They haven't repaired the shutters but they look to be secured and tied down. The street below was open.
