Very cost prohibitive. There are much bigger and busier networks that have even one exit at busy stations. It is usually not a problem. The Via station is certainly accessible from the LRT station, but yes you will have to go outside.

For comparison, Ottawa vs. Montreal indoor connection to subway on opening day.

Montreal
  1. Place Ville Marie 1
  2. Place Ville Marie 2
  3. Place Ville Marie 3
  4. Place Ville Marie 4
  5. Queen Elizabeth Hotel
  6. Gare Central
  7. Place Bonaventure
  8. Place du Canada
  9. Château Champlain
  10. Tour de La Bourse

Ottawa
  1. Place de Ville A
  2. Place de Ville B
  3. Place de Ville C
  4. Marriott Hotel
  5. Delta Hotel
  6. Podium (or Place de Ville D if built)
  7. Rideau Centre
  8. Hudson's Bay
  9. Transportation Building
  10. Westin hotel
  11. Convention Centre
  12. National Defence

And that's the worst case scenario for Ottawa. We could be adding 2 to 6+ buildings to the list.

No, it will be connected to one. There will be further connections from that building to others.

No, it will be connected to one, with five others accessible from that one.

Unlike many other undergrounds, there will be no station that has more than one integrated underground egress to a building.

for a total of 12 links between subway and buildings
No, 12 buildings that are ultimately linked to the subway via two entrances.

Wait, what - the Via station connection will now expose passengers to the weather?

Again, it's the same with Montreal, TO, Edmonton and Vancouver. Not all buildings have an escalator straight down to the subway. It's an underground city connected to buildings and subways.

You think Place Ville Marie is directly connected to the subway? Of course not! The only building with direct connection in MTL, as you define it, on opening day was Place Bonaventure.

There's no point in connecting Lyon to every building individually; street entrance in the Podium and direct connection to the underground shopping concourse (which is directly connected to all 6 PdV buildings) is all you need.

As for Rideau, the only other building that could have a direct connection is HBC. It wouldn't be viable or necessary for the Westin, Convention Centre or DND.

It is a short walk outside, mostly if not entirely covered from the rain. My comment was in reply to a previous post complaining that the VIA station is not connected to anything underground.

I'm fine with that, seeing lots of people on sidewalks is a very good thing for many reasons!

Well, if they had done nothing, things would have gotten worse, traffic wise, and current construction wise as well.

There are buildings on both sides of the street at a number of the stations.

But right now, it's entirely. If it reverts to less-than-entirely, that's a big downgrade for the pedestrian-comfort sphere.

25% tunnel completion if my math is correct.
Any word on the East Portal?

I take it that tunneling remains stopped at East Portal and there is no idea of when it will be able to proceed again.

^ Sounds about right.

Because the other two TBMs are way ahead of schedule (heck they're both on the stations already!), it's likely they'll compensate for lost time by making the central roadheader dig out Rideau Station and moving the meeting point between the central & eastern TBMs further east.

I agree. What makes the transition even worse is that those going between the train station main door and the station will be squeezed onto a very narrow and poorly maintained sidewalk. I never understood why they didn't just leave the station where it is.

Based on the picture on the LRT website it appears as though the connection will be covered.

They had to re-align the RoW to and from the station because the existing curves are too tight for trains.

The renderings they've shown so far show that the area between the LRT station and the train station will be landscaped with a much wider path and some sort of glass covering providing a measure of protection from the elements.

I guess my link didn't work.

Here's some pics that show the glass covering:

So there is a nice wide covered walk until you get to the parking lot entrance. Then you bump across the traffic entering the lot and then squeeze onto the narrow path that leads from there to the main entrance of the station... Right past the taxi stand where people are waiting/loading into cabs.

Oh, and how do you get to train yards?
