Here comes my NIMBY side. We have very few buildings from that era, keep it!!!! There is tons of space all around dt for the size of building they are looking for if the ampatheater is so important, if not fill up vacant spaces in an office or lease space in one of the office buildings getting ready to start construction.

I'm never a fan of tearing down 100 year old buildings. I feel that on that stretch of Congress any building built before WW2 should be protected. There's plenty of room for that proposed five story building elsewhere in downtown or better yet Mueller or the Domain.

My wife used to work in that office, for about 6 years. There's not that much historic about it to preserve, as the interior has been converted to a law office -- plain old office space. And it's pretty blah on the outside. And it has mold. Can't say I'll be sorry to see it go.

That building should be preserved. The conservative think tank can surely
Restore it or at least preserve the facade and build on top of it. The building on the outside still looks very nice and historic. What's wrong with all the other vacant lots downtown?

The Domain appears to be all Private Drives. Permit SP-2007-0544D Check out Document #26 or SPL-SP-2007-0544D_0~026(1) is the long version.

In A bit of very good news. American Campus Comminities has dropped thier purchase of the lot at the corner of MLK and Colorado. I am a very proud NIMBY at this moment!
THis Dorm would have been a sub-urban style apartment building in the Capitol Comlex, the CBD and a growing museum district.
Please take note all you folks that dump on "NIMBY's" carte Blanche. As I have said many times, there are appropriate actions for neighborhood groups. This was one. Not only was this a poor use of land for the above reasons, it also brought to light a CVC that actually needs more protection. AND , yes, in the most self serving way, would have indirectly affected my property value ( I live on the opposite side of the building, but what affects one, affects all!)
So hooray for group action. Lets hope a more appropriate use for the land is found.
If you want to be active, please encourage the State and UT to reconsider sale of said property or the impact that lot has on the view of the Capitol from the entrance to the University ( University Drive) and Littlefield Fountain.

And just to stir the pot. Horray for Rebuplicans office holders in the building who put presure on a "private property owner" To stop building something that negatively affected them. PROPERTY RIGHTS BE DAMN! LOL!.

HORRAY for Downtown NIMBYz. Glad that fell through.

I will call myself a NIMBY for anything authentic/special in danger.... la zona rosa (since it is literally in my back yard) being one of them. Anyone have info on that?

However, in the real world of business, this project has already lowered the values of every property within a few blocks of the proposed site. If the purchase deal closes, they are buying the site for several hundred thousand less than tax appraised value. Furthermore, should the proposed low-income housing project be built on the site, it will further devalue the surrounding properties!!!

Firm buys lakefront tract near Four Seasons; development plans unclear

"The chance to acquire a site with high-density development potential, expansive views of Lady Bird Lake, and frontage along the Waller Creek redevelopment presented an unparalleled opportunity," said Nate Paul, president and CEO of World Class Capital Group.

The land is across Cesar Chavez Street from the Austin Convention Center and across Trinity from the swank Four Seasons condominium high-rise. It's in a changing part of downtown that is expected to continue transforming as the Waller Creek tunnel is built, spurring new investment in the area.

Is that the land where that storage looking building made out of corrugated metal is??? If so that sure would be a loss if that building were lost...lol

HAAAAAA. These people have their ass hats on. IT. IS. DOWNTOWN. Do I even need to make a snarky response to that video??? I want to know what the downtown of a city with RAPID growth looks like?? I am no fan of Dallas, but what alternative is there??? FUCK ME. I'm sorry.

Lol. I like the people from Dallas just fine, but I don't think anyone from Austin would ever want their Downtown to be like Dallas'. It really doesn't matter because it never could be like Dallas' DT. Not with UT, the Lake and the streets. And I somehow don't think UT, the Lake or Congress or 6th are planning on getting up and moving anywhere anytime soon.

Hehe. She is right though. The people are what make it such a great place to be. But I just have to wonder if she knows what would be more boring than a Downtown with pretty buildings.... A Downtown with no people. If that is the kind of city she wants there are a few huge Downtowns in Texas where she can find lots of open empty spaces with no people after the bell every day.

yeah and isn't downtown dallas supposed to be like suuuuper dead for the most part? that's another thing that makes downtown austin very different from dallas'. and the foot traffic seems to be growing year after year.

Yeah, I think so. I walk by there fairly often. I've mainly seen rowing club stuff and the city's Christmas street lights in there. Just storage.

Yeah, that's the lot. Those shed metal buildings. I think at one time the company that has the horse drawn carriages stored their carriages there, too.

I tried searching for anything about it on the city's website using the address fronting Cesar Chavez, but nothing came up.

New Construction?

Does anyone know what might be going in at North Loop and North Lamar? At least 4 or 5 buildings have been razed. Could it be another mulit-use project like AMLI 5350 on Burnet?
