Why is all the news about things expanding just about vehicles. I don't think Saskatoon has realized about proper urban planning and that anything to do with the auto just leads to complete disaster.

Because the old dinosaurs on council only believe that increasing capacity is the way to relieve congestion. They refuse to believe that the way to relieve congestion is to reduce capacity, thus forcing cars off the road. They aren't going to change their ways until they're voted out, or retire.

I almost have more faith in 33rd becoming a vibrant commercial district than 20th St. It is home to several national retailers, and has a good mix of independents. It is too bad there is no theatre in that area. I think the build-out of Hampton Village will have a positive impact on 33rd as well (an increase in motor vehicle traffic traveling to downtown = customers!). If SIAST would focus on increasing enrollment, as well as building student housing or subsidizing private residential development in the area, there would be surge of new investment. Some would argue against subsidizing private development for the sake of improving the value of other properties along a street. But there may be some merit in it, especially if it delivers another benefit -- students walk to school. I admit, I haven't thought it through

My position has always been that the bus mall should stay at its present location, but it must be redesigned. Relocating would have a severe impact on downtown's daytime population. If it were the case that transit was utilized by more middle class citizens would people still be in favor of relocating it away from downtown? It sounds like the Barry Hotel all over again. Shifting the 'concern' from one area to another...for what end?

Hello all you Saskatoon people. I am a regina person who is living and working in your fine town for a few months. Now I have been exploring quite a bit lately but today noticed something interesting. Is the city starting on the south end of the Saskatoon bypass to the southwest of the dump? I drove out past the cn yards south and noticed quite a bit of survey sticks and heavy equipment out there. Anyone got any insight?

That's the South Circle Drive project. One 6 lane bridge, 5 overpasses, and 7 km of freeway = ~$300 million bucks.

I'm suprised no one else has noticed yet but the city has started streetscaping between 21st and 20th street on 3rd ave.

The bus mall should be moved from the current downtown location to the 25th street extension not because its a social problem but because it could then be used in the future to connect to the CPR line for LRT.

Exploration Camper makes a good point in terms of thinking towards the future and I agree with the idea of moving the bus mall to 25th street. The bus mall is simply where a lot of tranfers occur, I don't believe it willl have a dramatic affect on transit use to 'downtown' if its moved, as buses will still service stops in the downtown core. Also, someone, perhaps in jest, noted if it was on the 25th extention it could be located close to the police station....I don't think that is such a bad idea either! It might aleviate some of the concern people have about the bus mall being 'unsafe' (whether that is perceived or real).

With respect to the south bridge, I don't believe anyone has addressed or raised the topic that this primary bridge is going to go right by our landfill/dump! Does anyone know if there will be landscaping of the landfill (similar to the side that faces Valley Road where they have grassed and planted trees on the 'hill')?? Or will they continue the 'great wall of Saskatoon' barriers along that stretch to obscure the view? It would be a shame if nothing is done and the impression left by people circumnavigating our city to the south is of our landfill!

I know, it's a mess and it sucks. But think of the end result when it's all done. I'm eager to see what it looks like when it's finished.

Both Student Health and Student Counselling will benefit greatly from the new space. They're both jam packed into spaces in the residence halls right now. They were cramped even when I was a student there back in the 1990s.

I haven't heard anything but I would say the JB Black project on college is dead in the water or in serious trouble because I haven't seen a single person working there since around June. It's just an ugly slab of concrete with some supports sticking out of it, lovely..

^ Yeah, it hasn't gone anywhere in ages. However, over the past couple weeks I have, on the odd day, seen one lone construction worker on site. Hard hat and all, but nobody else to be seen. An odd sight.

Landscaped slopes is my guess...(these were from late August).

I saw them pumping water out of the parking level last week,and I have occasionally seen two or three guys working above. But, the pace has definitely slowed...maybe they shifted the crews to the project across the street.

True...although I wonder how a passenger rail system will operate with the freight rail traffic. Could they share the line? I am sure that will sort itself out in the future.
