A few pics

I took a few pictures of the construction sites, both major and minor, that I see on my way to work. There isn't much to see yet, but I thought I'd post them anyway. These were all taken with a Sony Cyber-shot H10.

The first 3 are of the condos going up on the south side of College not far from the University Hospital:

Here are 4 images of the cranes and construction site at the University. I love those cranes.

This last one is the deck at Alexander's Restaurant going up for the summer. It's on the corner of College and Cumberland:

And here are 2 images of a gopher that I got near the university. They're big (~1.5 megs each), so I'll just link to them instead of forcing people to download them automatically when they hit this page. I got about 2 feet away from the little bloodsucking fiend before it when back into its hole.

The gopher has bad plaque on those top teeth.

You know you have a good picture of a gopher when the CSI:LV team could reconstruct your image from the reflection in the gopher's eye. Being mauled to death by gophers is a terrible way to go, but at least they identified your body...

Thanx for the construction pics gopher65.

That gopher is one scary dude. Ha ha never mind CSI, you would need Bones to come in and identify you after that sucker got done with you.

I would rather park across the river and hike it across the bridge then park in their parking lots. That company needs to die a slow and painful death and city council needs to pass a law that regulates these dirt parking lots.

It's just our way of paying tribute to Joni Mitchell. "They paved paradise
and put up a parking lot"

I have started viewing them as future head offices.

I would suspect he would change the exterior of the building as well, hopefully it won't have to make you angry any more. haha.
That would be cool if they revealed the original ornamented facade, if it wasn't destroyed, that is.
Does anyone havea photo of the original facade of the former JHC Willoughby building? All I could find was this postcard:

Yup, here's one from the public library:
http://spldatabase.saskatoonlibrary.ca/i...s&EF=&DF=&MR=5&RL=0&EL=0&DL=0&NP=255&MF=

It's the 3rd image down. I'd post it directly but I'd be violating copyright.

I share your disappointment. My biggest complaint with regard to our downtown is the over abundance of surface parking. Gravel surface parking just looks that much more dreadful. I really wish the casino would have been built in downtown to take up most of midtown's surface lot. What an eyesore.

On that note, IMPARK does not actually get a legit collections company after you. Law states that they can't do anything to you or your credit rating. I just refuse to pay any ticket I get from them haha. Only downside is they call your house daily for months! Beats paying $60 to support them in anyway. Just make sure not to park on their lot with the same license plate number if you have outstanding tickets, though..they could tow your vehicle (at their expense, I believe).

Thanks, unfortunately it appears the ornate parapet has been removed. By the way, it says it is public domain so there is no copyright. the site doesn't seem to allow copying though.

Circle Drive South

Looks like Graham and Flatiron have just leased part of the old Mercury Graphics building.
Located on Fletcher Road in the Holiday Park Industrial it can't get much closer to the South Bridge work site.

Whoever put together that site is an idiot. Under each photo it says "Copyright Saskatoon Public Library", and beside each photo it says "This image is public domain". Uh... you can't copyright images that are in the public domain. That's kinda the whole point of being public domain.

Wow, the current skin hides that facade quite well. I was told it was covered up long ago, but never knew what was underneath. Thanks for posting a photo.

Yes! Great shots of the little pests.

I can't wait until they reveal the plans for AGS.

Gallery honours Mendel

Initial plan for city's new gallery to go before council

By David Hutton, The StarPhoenix April 23, 2010

The $58-million Art Gallery of Saskatchewan will prominently display Fred Mendel's original art donation in a large, stand-alone gallery and tell his life story in an adjoining foyer that will exhibit the murals once painted on the walls of the meat-packing magnate's office.

The gallery's functional plan, which will be presented to city council on Monday, sets out how the building will be configured and what will be housed inside it.

Included in the plan is an outdoor public plaza that would replace the roundabout on Second Avenue.

The preliminary plan will be used as a template by the selected architectural firm, which will be chosen this summer from a short list of five candidates, to guide the development.

The legacy of Mendel, the art patron and meatpacking plant owner who founded the Mendel Art Gallery in 1964 and died in 1976, has become the centre of debate in the community after the decision was announced last year not to name the new gallery after him or further pursue less costly renovations at the present gallery site.

Art Gallery of Saskatchewan officials have maintained since the announcement that Mendel will be honoured in the new building.

The functional plan shows an 1,800-square-foot gallery located on the main floor where Mendel's art donations, housed for years in storage, will be permanently displayed, and a 250-square-foot foyer that will display murals painted by famous Saskatoon painter William Perehudoff.

The murals, commissioned by Mendel when Perehudoff was a worker at the meat plant, were saved before the Mitchell's Gourmet Foods plant was torn down.

"It just hope that the room shows the murals in the same format as they were in the Mitchell's plant," said Dave Denny, a local entrepreneur who helped save the works from the wrecking ball.

"If you break them up it's kind've like breaking up a Picasso."

The main challenge was aligning the three different uses of the site for River Landing, the Remai Arts Centre and the new art gallery, said Michael Lundholm, the Toronto-based architect in charge of the functional plan.

The new gallery will include a large atrium inside the Second Avenue entrance, an upscale bakery and cafe, a community art studio, a gallery shop and a lecture theatre. The exhibition space will more than double what exists at the Mendel Art Gallery.

"It's got all the right ingredients," Lundholm said. "It certainly has a strong public presence and a strong number of spaces that should involve a lot of people and a lot of different audiences than just the Mendel sitting alone.

"Our research showed us that the trend was to emphasize public functions to break down the boundary between the public and the art gallery."

The overall exhibition space will grow to more than 17,000 square feet from 7,000 in the current Mendel gallery. The total gallery is now estimated to be 62,000 square feet and attaches in an L-shape around the Remai Arts Centre.

What the building will look like and its exact layout will be left to the chosen architect. The city whittled a list of 15 firms down to five and will interview shortlisted candidates in May. The design of the recently completed Art Gallery of Alberta and the Royal Ontario Musuem have been left to competitions that include public input in the selection.

"Design competitions tend to run up budgets because they favour risky architecture," Lundholm said.

Instead, the city plans to ask for public feedback on some preliminary designs provided early on by the winning firm, he said.

One of the suggestions of the functional plan is to convert the roundabout at the entrance of the gallery that connects Second Avenue and Spadina Crescent into a public plaza to give the gallery entrance more space. Second Avenue will have to be realigned to accommodate the loss of the roundabout.

The roundabout features Prairie Wind, the public art installation featuring 25 tall steel poles that move in the wind, which is better suited for pedestrian traffic than vehicles, Lundholm said.

Lundholm said planners initially suggested extending the entrance of the gallery out to the middle of the roundabout to give it more prominence but city officials and politicians were concerned about blocking the view of the river and maintaining access to Second Avenue.

"The feeling was pretty clear and pretty universal that the river view be left," he said.

Canadian Tire moves

Reports in the media today say Canadian Tire is going to take over the old Walmart in Confederation. What a change that will be. Imagine going into a decent parking lot for a change.

I hope ours doesn't end up looking like the AGA or ROM. Jagged or curvy tentacles will be tacked onto the Remai Arts Centre...I'm a cynic at this point.

I like that they're converting part of the roundabout into a public plaza. Realigning the road though?

Sorry to rain on your parade, but Saskatoon could only hope for something as iconic as those two museums. I'm finding a trend in modern canadian architecture to be occurring and that is these types of buildings! So it would be great for Saskatoon to something this forward, I really think it would compliment LP if it is built. I'm hoping for something completely deconstructive and outlandish!

I know, but I'm a big visual arts fan. It's the first thing I do when I visit a new city so exhibition space is the most important thing to me in comparison to the extras such as lecture theatres and large foyers. I understand there'd probably be high diminishing returns to go with a really large gallery in a small city like Saskatoon. Galleries are likely designed for the average person to visit a couple times a year. It's just my greedy preference; it's my tax dollars!
