MONTGOMERY -- House Speaker Seth Hammett has committed to give first priority on Tuesday to a bill that would allow Huntsville to establish a special tax increment finance district for a $1 billion development at Redstone Arsenal.

If the bill wins approval, LW Redstone, (JW Wilson)a Montgomery company, would lease and develop 470 acres of unused property on Redstone Arsenal for offices, classrooms, research and conference space for federal workers and contractors.

The plan also call for two hotels with a total of 350 rooms, restaurants and stores.

In this case, LW Redstone has agreed to buy bonds directly and be repaid as the tax growth occurs.

The new development would ultimately include 4 million square feet of office space and employ about 14,000 people.

I haven't really been able to grasp this from the articles I've read about it, but is this gonna be open to the entire public, or just those that have clearance to enter the base?

You got to be F'n kidding me?! 6 stories?! Please tell me no! this spot needs at least a 10-15 story building to make a main focal point for the city and to help the down town feel more spread out. I was very saddened when I saw this....

Just be patient fellas. Eventually, downtown Huntsville will be drowned by short, midrise buildings and EVENTUALLY taller buildings will have to be constructed and it will be unavoidable. Plus, all the midrise buildings will keep a taller building from looking out of place.

Yea but,all of the mid rise buildings are getting the good spots now.

We'll just have to encourage the developers to make the mid rises look extremely ugly, so that people won't feel bad when we have to tear them down

There is so much potential in downtown Huntsville and yet plain-looking-cookie-cutter buildings are put in such prime locations. When I see what other cities are doing with new construction, Huntsville is put to shame.

Huntsville well know for space exploration and high technology is really founded in 200 years of history..3 historic districts with another one on the way help get this distinction.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation has named Huntsville one of America's Dozen Distinctive Destinations for 2010.

The honor recognizes the city "for offering cultural and recreational experiences different from the typical vacation destination," Trust officials said in making the announcement today.

"Huntsville features dynamic neighborhoods, a rich architectural heritage, cultural diversity and a strong commitment to historic preservation and revitalization," according to the preservation group. All that gives the city "an abundance of character and an authentic sense of place."

Sam Frazier, Alabama adviser for the National Trust, will present city and tourism leaders a plaque today at 11 a.m. in an appropriate place: the historic Regions Bank Building on the west side of the Courthouse Square. (The white building with the big Ionic columns is nearly 175 years old.)

Huntsville was selected "for its diligent efforts to protect and share the city's heritage, which ranges from deep Southern roots to space exploration, and for its remarkable leadership in sustainability, serving as a role model for cities across America," the Trust said in a news release.

Huntsville is the first town in Alabama to become a Distinctive Destination.

On a negative note very few architecturally significant structures have been built in Huntsville since the 1950's.

Definatly agree! Huntsville has so much potental to look awsome,its in a great location. Just hope for the best I guess?!

Constellation scrapped due to Obama's cutting of state projects along with the space program. Can 2012's next debate come any faster so we can get rid of this dumba$$ so-called leader? And to think I voted for him.

It really ticked me that he cut that funding. As much as I.... strongly dislike him for doing that, I'm glad that he's encouraging private companies to get involved with space exploration. I don't think they'll ever do as much as NASA could, but at least there's a STRONG chance some of them will set up shop in Huntsville.

I agree that cutting it cold turkey may not be wise, I do feel, however, that getting private companies involved will actually speed up the space program and be able to do a whole lot more.

Just think of the airplane industry for example and how fast and far it came to be due to private companies.

Hopefully some of these companies will set up shop here.

I've noticed that Cheeburger Cheeburger in Providence has closed.

Also the Mikawa Japanese Restaurant behind the defunct Driving 2000 on University also looks like it has closed.

That really sucks Mikawa had some great Sushi. While I like Cheeburger Cheeburger we have enough burger places in Huntsville already and there's still another Cheeburger Cheeburger still open on Airport. I wonder what type of place could move into Providence in place of it?

Huntsville International got the federal grant it wanted to attract a low-fare carrier: http://blog.al.com/breaking/2010/02/huntsville_international_airpo_2.html

"[Transportation Secretary] LaHood's announcement said that the grant will lower air fares for Huntsville travelers by providing low-fare service to and from Baltimore-Washington International Airport and Orlando International Airport."

Could this finally be AirTran? Sounds like it to me.

I hope it works out. Attracting a low fare carrier could allow the airport to see a jump in traffic, hopefully attracting people from further outside the city. I just hope that it will work well enough for the airport to continue the service well after the grant money is gone.

Air Tran might be the best option available right now.

Maybe a Johnny Rocket's? Same kind of atmosphere but much better food.
