I heard today that the Albert Street Bridge is to undergo a $5 Million dollar renovation this summer. That should be a nightmare for traffic.

Oh my... I was in Regina the last time the Albert Street Bridge was renovated.
It was a huge gong show to say the least... but when it was done, it was like new.

That would be great! Though I would rather have The Broad Street Bridge renovated.. it is so blah right now.

I thought there was more to be done with the Broad Street bridge. 5 year plan or whatever it is with Wascana Centre. Or did that get cancelled along with the footbridge between the Centre of the Arts and the Science Centre?

Well, I havent been down to the park in a while, but I can tell you that the Broad street pedestrian bridge is still alive. I've seen some structural drawings and renderings that are fairly recent, including a nifty night-time rendering which I can't seem to find on the internet

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think they began planting those new trees last spring.

But I have no idea about the link between the Science Centre and Centre of the Arts. Are you sure it's cancelled? These things take time. It wasn't too long ago that the conceptual drawings were released. I'm guessing it's still just in the planning phase.

The Delta Convention Centre is considered Class A office space, but I have no idea about rent there.

Rents are now well over $20 psf net for Class A in Regina now. For the best existing space it is over $30 or about $40-45 gross rent (includes operating costs and property taxes). For new construction it is going to be close to $40 net, $55 gross, perhaps as high as $60. In Saskatoon right now landlords are asking close to $60 for new projects.

Yes it is true that Harvard has assembled land at 12th and Hamilton and want to build a building. It is also true that there is virtually zero Class A space available downtown. I wouldn't get too excited about the cranes swinging anytime soon though. Harvard will not build on spec. They need tenants. They may have a few, but frankly there is still a lot of resistance in Regina to paying $55-60 psf. Most tenants now are paying under $30 gross, so we are talking doubling the rent. In this uncertain environment, there are not a lot of companies willing to commit right now. Also, financing is hard to come by right now with the credit crisis. I am told they are not even close to being ready to move forward with construction, although apparently in December the actually closed the purchase of the land.

I wouldn't be surprised if Harvard is talking with the government about moving their offices from the FCC Tower (formerly known as the CIBC building) on 11th and Hamilton. Harvard owns that building and FCC has been slowly taking over more and more of the building. FCC wants more space.

Harvard bought the Conexus Plaza across the street and put in the Pedway mostly for that reason - to accomodate FCC's overflow in Conexus Plaza until they get arouind to building the second tower for the FCC building, which is actually a smaller, separate project from the proposed new tower immediately to the south on 12th and Hamilton.

It is possible FCC may take some space in the new tower depending on which project goes ahead first.

I note that Harvard also bought the one storey building immediately to the south of the FCC building. They almost control the whole block, although I believe the new VIP Men's Wear location is in between.

Regina has a ton of cash going towards the Evraz Place upgrades, the intermodal facility, and more money towards road repairs than ever before. I don't think that there is more money being spent, but spent on different things.

don't know if this has been mentioned but the talked about the old superstore last night on the news.
-single standing restaurant
-fast food chains
-100 room hotel

They made it sound like those three will be built in the former parking lot somwhere, hotel to be on dewdney(talk about a popular hotel come Labour Day )
-office space and retail space for the main building. Which I think was already known, apparently one of these retail stores will constitute a big chunk of it and will be new to Regina.
They also mentioned the exterior will be getting a paint job.

speaking of hotels.....we need an airport hotel. I grew up and still have a lot of family in the Assiniboia area, We have relations coming in from the States and Germany quite often. Most of the time our visitors have the early morning flights and they opt to stay in Regina overnight. Every one of them would prefer to stay at the airport rather then downtown...Pilots and crew that overnight in Regina would stay at the airport hotel as well. The business would be there. As Regina grows i believe we will see this happen....especially with Harbor Landing,the Global Transport Hub- Intermodal, Loblaws etc coming to Southwest Regina

There is an opportunity for someone and hopefully it gets done. A 4 floor Days Inn connected to the airport would be very appealing.

I truly believe and airport hotel would be a great asset to our city. ex; Saskatoon has many hotels not very far from the airport on the north stretch of circle drive; they might as well be airport hotels. Besides it wouldn't have to be very large to start of; it could be built to expand as needed. Besides, we have no bus service to the airport. If people want to stay overnight in this city they have to pay for a 10 dollar cab ride downtown then pay for the room. Though this is just my opinion

The Exhibition Assoc. would really like to see a hotel built on the ex grounds near the the new 6 ice sheet multiplex. You can see it getting lots of business for hockey and soccer tournaments as well as for concerts and other events in the various ex facilities. Plus its close to thr airport. They don't have any proposals yet.

I remember our flight from Regina to Vancouver via Calgary last year Easter weekend on Westjet. Our Regina to Calgary leg became delayed so that we wouldn't make our connecting flight to Vancouver, so Westjet put us up (and a couple dozen more travellers going the same route) in the Calgary Delta Airport Hotel. Since our new connecting flight was scheduled in the early evening the next day, Westjet paid for 2 nights, so we could stay in the hotel up to our departure time (check-out time is normally 11am. We took advantage, and bought supper from the food area of the airport and ate in the comfort of our room prior to our departure!) Awesome! No rushing around in traffic esp. during rush hour! No worrying to check-in on time! No aimless hanging in the airport for the afternoon! Good job Westjet!
