it's nice for Saskatoon. But i'm not that impressed.

I like the design. Good example of mixed use....something a lot of developers in this province can't wrap their heads around. The colour I feel is a bit mundane, but perhaps it will look better than the rendering suggests.

It's too bad it was shortened, not because I am stuck on tall buildings, but only because of the benefits a 100 or so more residents could do for the area.

i am accually i perfer it being shortened, broadway had a unique vibe for saskatoon and i think a tall building would hurt it. build buildings taller off the main street. and ccf i don't think a loss of less than 100 will truely affect broadway. it is busier than nearly any street in downtown and saskatoon

I was just watching the Global News Final. They had a bit about Cameco. There was mention they have no intentions of building any new corp head office in Saskatoon. I guess they want to work on growing company earnings. Anyone else hear anything? I really hope I wrong here!!

CtrlAltDel seems to have reliable inside information about Cameco building downtown and has mentioned on occasion that it is more or less a go...

I think this is a good time for him to jump in and soothe our fears?

Well that information is definitely contrary to what I've been hearing. I've heard Friday (tomorrow) will be when they make the decision on which downtown location they choose. I'd be very surprised (and dissapointed) if they choose to stay put.

^In the first pic you can see the redevelopment of the former King George Hotel (the second oldest hotel in Saskatoon). A local company, Meridian Developments (who just released the LUXE project on Broadway) is transforming the KG into ground level retail, 2nd floor office space and loft condos above. Meridian claims they will restore the building to its former glory and then some. We believe them, they do great work!

The bonus pic is of Princeton Tower (back left) and PCS Tower (front right). PCS being PotashCorp of Saskatchewan, which I believe finished trading on the TSX a few weeks ago as the most valuable company in Canada.

But the article mentions that the Empire Theatre opened in 1910, then operated primarily as a cinema after 1930, so it couldn't have been destroyed by fire the same year it opened. If it did catch fire it must have been decades later. The Queen's Hotel on 1st Avenue South was a victim of fire in 1980.

As for the Empire's location, I will speculate that it used to be on the Impark lot site.

The Empire Hotel was a victim of fire, sometime around 1910. It caught fire and had to me demolished along with the Empire Theatre. Saskatoon's performing arts scene was set back a few years/decades due to the loss of a significant venue.

The Scotia Centre towers were built in the late 1980s. They sit on the site of the former Capitol Theatre, built in 1929 and demolished in 1979.

The Franklin, built in 2000. A nice looking building in my opinion. Let's hope Remai can build something as nice on Spadina. I still can't believe how gross the Riverfront looks.

2nd Avenue Lofts looks great. Thanks for the updated pics. Pin splash from KG project should ensure good value and lots of equity. I wonder when it will sell out.

I've been lurking for awhile now (1oo pages or so now? lol) and thought I'd finally chime in on some stuff and start contributing where I can .

I just caught the tail end of the bit on the news on Cameco's CEO saying they had no plans for a new building. I believe his words were something along the lines of "why would we want to take skilled workers away from where we need them to continue to grow our business (insert file footage of people working in the Uranium mines here) to build a new building downtown?" That doesn't sound promising, but at the same time doesn't make much sense when they're already building a new building next door to the current HQ.

New cubical walls and office equipment is being moved into the old Ashley furniture building (were these Cameco offices??). They must just have the top floor done because the bottom floor is still a ways away. They had window washers cleaning the top floor windows as well, making them look all spiffy heh.

It looks like they might be installing some more windows on the North side of the Rumley building today. There was a construction worker in one of the windows with the plastic removed looking like he was prepping it, and there was at least one new window already in place from what was there yesterday.

Off-topic, but I went through the thread for The Bow in Calgary yesterday and all I can say is wow...what an unbelievable pace those guys are going at, I can only dream that things moved that quickly here! (i.e. the 2nd Ave. Lofts, how many years has it been now??)

Speaking of the Airport, I knew that as soon as they finished it back in 2006 or whenever, they would need to expand again.
With regards to Cameco, I think the possibilities of them moving downtown would depend on them selling their current building. What company would move in there I don't know. But it seems Cameco would have a lot of conditions pending in order for them to move downtown.

As for the ugliest building in the city. Seager Wheeler Hall, inside and out.
